Alonso unhurt in plane incident

By Pablo Elizalde Monday, January 5th 2009, 09:57 GMT

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso has escaped unhurt following a plane incident in Kenya.

The Renault driver's plane made contact with a building before take-off, damaging one of its wings. Alonso, his wife and the rest of the passengers and crew are fine.

"Fernando indeed had a plane incident yesterday," a Renault spokesperson told autosport.com. "His aircraft touched a building and damaged its wing.

"Fernando and his family are fine. They will be flying back to Europe today. It's apparently not as serious as some people are trying to make it sound."

The Spaniard had spent the New Year in Kenya, where team boss Flavio Briatore owns a resort.

It was hardly a plane crash in the common usage of the term, but I suppose it could have been more serious and I'm glad he's okay.

Fernando Alonso's agent has denied reports that the Formula One star was involved in a minor plane accident on Sunday.

There had been suggestions the two-time world champion was flying back from a holiday in Kenya with his wife when the light aircraft he was travelling in brushed a building on take-off, damaging a wing.

But the agent for the Renault driver insisted it was not as serious as reported.

"It seems that the plane took a blow while they were parking it," said Luis Garcia Abad. "Fernando wasn't even inside the aircraft.

"We didn't give it the slightest importance and because of that this commotion surprises us. It doesn't even qualify as an accident."

Tell that to DC who was actually in a plane crash where people died.

What is it with light aircraft accidents and people connected to Motorsport? Coulthard survived a crash but his pilots tragically didn't, Colin McRae and two of his children die in a helicopter crash, Dave Richards escapes a helicopter crash unhurt, Alessandro Nannini loses his hand in a helicopter crash and David Leslie is killed in a plane crash.

I don't trust light aircraft and helicopters. :(
