Lewis Hamilton has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s New Years Honours List.

Lewis Said

“It is a massive honour and incredible privilege for me to receive an MBE from Her Majesty The Queen. It is the most amazing culmination to what has been quite a year for me. The support I have received from the UK as a whole has been fantastic and a huge motivation, it is something I am very appreciative of,” Lewis said. “This is not just a proud moment for me, but also for my family and every single person involved with the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team. I could not have achieved any of this without them.”
“It has been an outstanding year for British sport as a whole, and it is great to see so many fellow sportsmen and women being honoured today. I am also very humbled to be included on the Honours list alongside all the members of the general public who have been recognised for their tireless work in such varied and worthwhile arenas. I am very fortunate to have been awarded for achieving my dream, it has required a lot of hard work and dedication, however it has been worth every single minute and I only hope that I can inspire young kids to do the same, whatever their dream may be.”

I think I'm right in thinking that DC hasn't been given an OBE or MBE. Disappointing that he hasn't been awarded an honour after 15 years of service to British motorsport.

Good point
He deserves an OBE for the amount of time he has spent in Motorsport

Weren't Nigel Mansell & Damon Hill only awarded MBEs for their WDCs? - Seems to be the going rate if so.

As for DC, I still think he'd have to actually win a Championship of some description to be considered for an award.

He was never a WDC, he lost the British F3 title to Rubens, was he a champ in anything before that?

Chris Hoy got a knighthood I believe :D

As for DC, actually, no. He hasn't really won anything. He did win at LeMans one year though, in the GT class during 1993, and he did win in Formula Ford. But yeah, he's always been the 2nd or 3rd guy.

For the non Brits like myself, here are the classes for the most excellent:

* Knight Grand Cross (GBE) or Dame Grand Cross (GBE)
* Knight Commander (KBE) or Dame Commander (DBE)
* Commander (CBE)
* Officer (OBE)
* Member (MBE)

I guess Lewis has to win a few more. James Bond was a Commander (Maybe not the same thing) :hehe:

As somebody who is British, I feel these awards are now almost meaningless. The number of people who receive honours is so large that it is not really a surprise to see anybody who has achieved anything of even the remotest significance gets something. In recent years the honours system in Britain has become cheapened, so getting an MBE or whatever is not such a big deal anymore. Therefore, I do not think that anybody can gurn about Hamilton getting something when you see some of the deadbeats who receive honours. Also, as somebody else said, Mansell and Hill got MBEs for their winning the drivers' title, so Hamilton is not getting any preferential treatment at all. Moreover, I do believe Hamilton did deserve an honour of some sort. That he has been driving for an in-form McLaren all of his young career does not detract from that fact that he has shown some moments of tremendous skill and looks like he could become a great driver with another season or two's experience. Finally, though, I would say that I would like to see some recognition given to those 1,100 plus people who were behind Hamilton's success - the engineers and mechanics etc. What I really want to know, however, is when the hell Ron Dennis is getting knighted.

James Bond was a commander in the British Navy not quite the same thing.

I am a royalist and the whole MBE/CBE thing just annoys me. As a british serviceman I work with people who have server the queen for up to 33 years. they live and breath the forces. they would die for there country, yet have they got a CBE or MBE nope. (I am not having a go at Lewis here) So why should people be awarded them for doing something that they like doing? I like drinking, do I get a MBE for it nope, so why should some of the people who like swimming or rowing or driving cars fast?!?!?!?

Has anyone seen the petition for the ELIZABETH STAR it is a medal (much like the american purple heart but for British servicemen) that has a hugh following.
The Prime Minister and 400 MPs are in favour. So what’s the problem? Some military brass hats and MOD civil servants are opposed. They think that a new medal might devalue the currency of British medals that are given sparingly.

Not that the same argument affects them. In their refurbished MOD HQ, civil servants sitting on their seats that each cost £1,500 proudly accept their CBEs , their knighthoods and other gongs for their desk based work.

they have a facebook group

Right that my rant over

Moss never won a WDC

I do not mind Olympians getting awards, for they do not get a lot of money etc. for what they do. Professional sports stars and the such like, however, are handsomely paid for their services. I feel that honours should be reserved for people who do charity work, fight for their country etc. As I said before, though, if you are going to give deadbeat civil servants etc. an honour then people cannot say Hamilton himself should not get one.

don't get me wrong I am not saying that if I was Lewis etc then I would turn it down if it was offered. I am just saying I do not think that they should of been offered it

Congradulation to Lewis for his MBE. He'll no doubt be knighted in years to come, thanks to the ridiculous selection process of the Queen's honour list. It has really devalued the awards.
No disrespect to the winners, Hoy deserved it mainly because of his one off feat.
And yes he'll gain alot of money now, but before the Olympics this summer he would be miles off the wages of footballers and Hamilton.

Id second the call for Ron Dennis to be knighted. But only if they knight John Surtees, that has been coming too long.

Ron definitly deserves one - id actually put a call for Dave Richards to get an honor as well
