I still think another year in a car suited to his style of driving is necessary before such comparison is made. His results were impressive enough in the Renault, which was much different on its tyres. I hope that things turn around for him because he's a talented driver.

Kovalainen was pretty dreadful in 2008, and, whilst there were some mitigating circumstances, they don't fully explain things. But I still cannot help but think we are getting too far ahead of ourselves. Kovalainen has shown himself to be a slow learner, but when he finally twigs on, he seems to do a good job. I would give Kovalainen the first four or fives races of the 2009 season to show what he can do. If he's not up to standard after that, then I would demote or sack him.

I'd give him the full season, but if he doesn't perform to spec, he should be relegated to a test role and make room for some new hot shot that has more fire under his arse

A full season, in my opinion, is far too long. Kovalainen will have had a say in how in the MP4-24 is designed, will have had the close-season to brush up his skills in McLaren's state of the art simulator and test cars proper etc. If Kovalainen is not doing the business within a handful of races, it's clear he's not up to standard. McLaren cannot afford to give a struggling Kovalainen a full season. Last season his ineptitude cost McLaren the constructors' title and he was not able to support Hamilton as the battle for the drivers' title was at the endgame stage. Kovalainen could do something similar in 2009. The team must not allow it to happen again.
