Why do f1 racers run tape across the top of there helmet visors?
i have seen this dating all the way back to the late 60's

Its not tape. Its a tear off visor.
Because a Formula One driver does not have a windscreen, his crash helmet visor can get very dirty during the race. Instead of windscreen wipers the driver has a number of tear-off strips on his visor, these thin clear strips cover the visor and are removed to give the driver a clear view.

referring to is the very top of the visor where you see sponsor names
and such!

i think it started of as a sun visor type of arrangement that the PR man got his hands on

its to block out the sun, i have one on my Karting Helmet.

i kind of thought that was the reason, but i also thought it might be a
way of narrowing the line of sight, like getting rid of all upper vision!
distractions like sky and trees and various other what nots!!!!!
i just started karting, my father was a professional racer and indy car
restorer and historian i grew up in and around race cars my whole
childhood but never payed attention to the details my father died when i was fourteen
so we never got the chance to connect on that level, i wanted to be a rock n roller anyhow! who really wants to do what
their parents do? i'm now a professional musician, i was on tour when i first drove a kart and its
been non stop speed addiction!!! and i don't mean in a camaro or a mustang!!!!
ive been studying all of formula one history from my fathers books, films old, racing papers and audio tapes
i'm glad i signed on with you guys, i have never been on a forum before, i think your knowledge can only help!

hey ronnie...who was your dad, ive been into racing since 1967 and i may have heard of him

Hey 12 door,
My fathers name was William Smith, he ran midgits and sprints out of western pa
from 69 to around 74 75ish then he had the kids and hung it. Later he would run Yenko High Performance
and marine out of Canonsburg pa under Don Yenko better known for the late sixtys Camaro's and nova's
at the same time he started rebuilding old Offenhauser's or Offy's! and soon moved into full car restorations,
mostly midgets and early champ cars. He also sold a few cars for Gary stanton, sprints in the early eighties
maybe the Gambler chassie? not sure.
