Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has criticised the introduction of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems (KERS) in Formula One next year - claiming they are too expensive and questioning whether they will have any value for improving road car technology.

Formula One teams will be allowed to run KERS from the start of next season in a move that will improve F1's green credentials and fast-track car manufacturers' knowledge of energy recovery systems.

But di Montezemolo has spoken out against the move - saying he believes it is wrong to introduce KERS because the costs of developing the technology are so high.

"The future looks very complicated with these new regulations," he was quoted as saying by Autosprint. "We feel introducing KERS already this year was a mistake, even though we're in favour of F1 being a technological springboard. But the energy recovery system in the races will in any case be very different from the road system.

"It's true, however, that the costs are prohibitive, and with FOTA we've studied important proposals in order to meet Max Mosley's fair requests regarding spending cuts.

"The engine for three GPs for ten million euros means the cost is halved compared to 2008. In 2011 we'll get to five millions, compared to 20 millions from four years before then. On top of that, there is the reduction of testing to 15,000 kms.

"I think we need to rely on good sense: the general one, and the FIA world council's one. Our proposals approved for 2009 set an example. We have two objectives: to help the smaller teams, and to allow F1 to still do research and innovation, also for fuel suppliers.

"It's unthinkable that the big car manufacturers can accept to re-badge the engines built by someone else."

Are you struggling that badly with KERS, Monte? :hehe:

Oh well F1 revolves around Ferrari afterall. If Ferrari are really struggling, then I am sure Ferrari can convince the FIA to scrap it altogether. But on the other hand Monte could be simply taking everyone for a ride so the compeititors will think Ferrari will not be competitive in 2009 when in fact they will be. :D

I think he's dreading Ferrari will have a repeat of 1991 next year. :P

But at least he does have a point in the last sentence about the stupid standard engines idea. A few weeks back I was thinking as long as it drops costs I'm ok but I'm against it again.

i thought the exact same thing Ferrari's KERS isn't ready and there in the s*** but Mclaren are looking into a soloution to get KERS developed faster by working with Freescale Semicoductors.

Its looking good for 2009 for Mclaren, i Force India must of seen what Ferrari have and thought sod that.

:P Well time will tell, but it's not looking good.
The inital signs anyways.
Monte does make a point in a way with the KERS of F1 not being roadworthy.

Ferrari can help scrap the engine ideas of the FIA - but they won't get rid of the introduction of KERS now.

Why would Ferrari have any interest in saving fuel?

What he means there is he don't think it will be of any point in HIS road cars which he's is quite correct if you stick a V12 in a car theres not much point in putting an fuel saving system in is there?

Mclaren however would be able to sell the technology to car manufacturers such as Mercades, Ford, GM etc..

If it was all going ok for Ferrari he would keep his gob shut.

She's being big headed as usual F1 does not revolve around Ferrari and the cost the teams have already payed out developling KERS would have to be underwritten if the FIA cancled it or there would be hell to pay with an already shakey structure going on with the engine crap.

Ferrari are just another team and F1 would continue without them if they left, They would be missed even i would Miss them but they are not F1 they are just a part of it.

As I said on another thread, the introduction of KERS should have been mandatory. No doubt Ferrari felt they needed some leeway so Monte got on the blower to Mosley.
