From F1 Fanatic:

1 November 2008 by Keith Collantine

After eight years as ITV-F1 commentator James Allen will commentate on his final live Grand Prix - for the time being at least - at Interlagos this weekend.

In that time he’s been subject to a huge amount of criticism, much of it coming on internet forums and blogs.

In a retrospective look at his time with ITV-F1, Allen has finally spoken about his reaction to the criticism:

'I was always pretty confident that when Murray decided to retire I would get the gig, but never anything less than utterly self-critical and seeking to improve with every race and every year, which I think I’ve done.

'It’s a very difficult and high-pressure job, because with 20 cars there are 20 different points of focus.

'You have to read the race, using a TV picture and the timing screens, while speaking at the same time and still leave spare brain capacity for talking to the producer and thinking about what comes next.

'And as it’s live and it’s all happening very quickly it’s very easy to make a mistake, which is why you always need to allow yourself a margin.

'Having a brilliant communicator like Martin Brundle as a partner helps a great deal too.

'I take a journalistic approach to commentary, I’m a storyteller; it’s my job to tell the story, not to be the story.

'Of course there are many people at home in their armchairs who think they could do it better and one of the challenges for me was that I replaced Murray just as the internet opened up to allow everyone to have their say in chat rooms and forums.

'But I know from market research and viewer feedback that the pros massively outnumber the vocal minority of cons.

'I’m very proud of the work that we have done with the North One production team over the years and we have 2 BAFTAs and 12 Royal Television Society awards to prove that the TV industry, like most viewers, rate our work very highly.'

What a load of rubbish. Nobody has criticised Allen for making mistakes. It's got nothing to do with that. What people don't like is tedious anecdotes, poor choice of metaphors and similes, and his blatantly biased points of view. He really is an arrogant tosser. Can you remember his "apology" after this season's Monaco Grand Prix. He apologised for people being offended, rather than for what he said.

Watch that from about nine minutes onwards.:rolleyes:

Of course, Jenson Button has been thrown on the scrapheap now, anyway.

:hehe:

It sounded terribly false. Davidson seemed happy, though. I still see that as a race I really need to add to my collection, because I was unfortunate not to have watched much of that season.

He dosen't get it wrong as much but it's his blatant bias view and him trying to copy Murray Walker but failing miserably.

It was a great race. It was particularly funny to see Alonso owning Schumacher in the rain. :hehe: De la Rosa also putt in a really good showing. The Hungaroring is a strange circuit. It's generally pretty uneventful, but when rains or something, it tends to produce a classic.

I'm not saying I'd do a better job than James Allen, all I'm saying is I'd like the chance to prove it... :hehe: Certainly there was a point mid way through this year's Monaco GP where my dad stopped listening to the TV and just listened to me instead!!!

Once again James Allen is getting unfair stick imo. His smilies and metaphors to describe things is just his way of doing things. Murray Walker came out with some terrible lines describing things but he is praised as commentating god. So he likes Ferrari. So What? He still gives the race winner praise and kudos to anyone that has a good race weekend.

He was an OK commentator. Not the best but certainly not as bad as everyone makes out on this board. Goodbye James you were alright

i can't remeber that many mistake he just chats random stuff and asks stupid questions to martin at stupid times.

for example he started to go on about the cost of a front wing during monaco and he said it loads. Then asked Damon random questions when he was trying to comment on the action in hungary.

Yeah James doesn't make the mistakes Murray did either. It's some of the rubbish he comes out with that annoys us. Anyone fancy a Tomato throwing contest?

Thris thread should be called 'James Allen strikes out"

as he has struck out of luck. He'll be calling Cockroach racing next year and thats about all he's good for.
