I believe a top driver requires a high level of aggression, and some very talented drivers do not have this to their detriment. I said aggression, that’s what I mean….not arrogance (that’s a different argument). Aggression, as in killer instinct.

An example: If you want to join the SAS, (Special Air Squadron) an elite British fighting force; one of the tests is that you take a baby rabbit and look after it for 6months, then you kill it and eat it. No matter how good a driver I was I couldn’t do this. The wierd thing is that two of my most favourite drivers also had this quality as did to of m least favourit, and one of my favourites did not have it :-?

Here is my list of who I think has this quality and who I think does not. I’ll start with my 3 favourites and 2 least favourites
Lewis- yes
Senna-yes
Damon-no
Schumacher-yes
Alonso- yes
Kimi (Not measurable on this scale-on another planet)
Massa –no
Montoya-YES
Fisi-no
Vettel-no
Kubica-yes
Heidfeld-no
Heikki-no
Glock-yes
I know there’s loads missing but I can't tell with some drivers.. while some are obvious.
What are your trhoughts?

I think F1 drivers have aggresive driving styles, but not aggresive personalities. I'm not trying to be a badarse, but if I were to get into a fight with any current driver the only that would intimidate me would probably be Coulthard.

To be honest, I dont think Senna would've ate the rabbit . He was too much of an emotional man to do such a thing as that. I think Kimi, and Montoya would probably be the only drivers who would eat that rabbit out of your list.

In the heat of the moment i think more than those two would eat it. I know Senna was emotional but i still think he would have eaten it. Schuey??Down in one!! Kimi would not have realised he'd eaten it :rofl: Juan would enjo it :hehe:

Yeah but the SAS soldiers arent in the heat of any moment, they have to eat it with their own will. I'm pretty sure a lot of people here including me, would eat that rabbit in the heat of the moment.

F1 decisions are often made in the heat of the moment

Ok, add Mansell to the list!

Of current drivers i'd say the Honda guys aren't particulary aggresive, Nakajima is aggressive but only when driving at his own pit crew and Piquet is amazingly aggressive.... he hates those walls and gravel traps with a passion. :P

Of course, every driver is capable of aggressive moments despite generally not being considered that type of driver - i'm thinking guys like Prost and Hakkinen.

I don't think that Senna would have eaten a rabbit. He was aggressive, but in other ways and for other reasons. To be honest, testing to see who would be an excellent killing machine is a very poor way of gaging whether or not somebody would be a good racing driver. That said, I do feel an element of aggression is needed off-track you need to be able to make your presence felt in the team. Senna, for instance, had a charismatic personality that drew people towards him, his work ethic was superhuman, so that motivated others to try and work as hard within the team, and he was very good at the political game within the team. He didn't go to the press with his complaints, but used whatever political situations in the team at the time to get what he wanted. That is what Coulthard, for instance, lacked. Aggression on the track is another matter. It can be about your driving style, how you force your way past people in overtaking moves, or how you defend your position etc.. This is something at which Button was absolutely pathetic. People used to be able to blown him out of the way, for they knew he would yield without too much of a fight.

This is just my take on it - I think how "Assertive" you are on the track may have something to do with where you are in the field and the guy in the car next to you. Take Button for example, he's a very very good driver but is in one of the worst cars on the track. Why be forceful with opponents to gain another non points position. However, put him in a Ferrari or McLaren where he would be challenging for wins and possible a WDC, then I'd expect him to be unyielding to all his competitors as that extra point or two could be all the difference between success and failure.

The counter to that is that Button usually has a lot less to lose than a Ferrari or a McLaren; he should be going for every overtake and being as aggressive as he can to get up the field. A frontrunner sometimes has to play the numbers game and go for consistency instead of blowing hot and cold.

perhaps aggression was a poor choice of word, but fronm the guys I selected I think you get what I mean. Yes Id add Mansel too. Its a particular ingredient that some drivers seem to have. Perhaps its a male hormone thing?? Having said that I think Danica has it, but in general its more prevelant in men....I think

perhaps gp2 drivers could get a baby rabbit look after it for 6months then run it over and if they back off or swerve there not good enough for F1.

This way we would only get drivers who just didn't give a s*** in F1 and lots more racing.
