Singapore is set to overhaul Monaco as the "jewel in the crown of Formula One" according to Sir Frank Williams.

This past weekend saw F1 take to the streets of the Marina Bay area as the sport held its newest street race - and did so under lights.

Not only did the race prove to be a scenic spectacle but racing was also on offer, something not always seen in street events.

And thus Sir Frank reckons Monaco has yet found its biggest rival for the honour of being F1's most prestigious race.

"It has a good chance of challenging Monaco for being the jewel in the crown of Formula One," he told The Guardian. "That is the most accurate thing to say.

"They have great weather, a very good track and the grandstands packed. I think there is a lot of enthusiasm out there."

What are people's views on this. As somebody who places a lot of importance on historic tracks, I'm slightly saddened to admit Sir Frank Williams' comment could have a lot in it. Singapore maybe does not quite match the glamour of Monaco just yet, but the track is more demanding.

Spot-on. It's much more entertaining than Monaco!

Itlike I said in my previous post about night racing, if the lights were taken away, then it was compared to Monaco... Monaco would still win hands down.

Overtaking is the key to a good race in my mind. I can watch vehicles running nose to tail at speed by watching a passenger train go through downtown denver. Monaco is a spectacle, and one that I love to watch because it harks back to the street days of F1..but overtaking there is damn near impossible. I was worried that Singapore would sport the same problem, but it turned out to not be the case. Singapore will never rival the glitz and glamour of Monaco simply because of Monaco's location...but as a race, I think I give the edge to Singapore.

Singapore was exciting, but extremely SLOWWWWW

Formula 1 isn't all about speed. I like watching recordings of Formula Ford races, and of course like Formula 3 - those are hardly light-speed categories, but there is some good racing in there. As long as there is good racing, what does it matter? :)

Not as slow as Detroit and Phoenix were. But it was miles better than Valenci-yawn and for the first time in over 10 years we've finally got to see real sparks coming out of the back of the cars, real bumps and typical street race crashes like Kimi's. Mind you I'm sure Kimi's crash was really because he caught a glimpse of the "Johnnie Walker" advertising board as he went round the corner...

And with next year's aero-restrictions coming into place we may see even more action.

But it definately doesn't displace Monaco from the "Jewel of the F1 crown", not after 1 race it doesn't.

I think the true reason why Sir Frank Williams labelled the Singapore track as "jewel in the crown of Formula One" is because Nico got 2nd place. Imagine if they came last.

Yeah I think that had a little something to do with it as well, and don't forget Nakajima came home 8th and got a point too.

Frankie boy seems to be losing it - simply rubbish to even compare Singapore to Monaco. That's like comparing the Dubai Open to Wimbledon :banghead::rolleyes:

i think all the team bosses are just psyched by the novelty of a night race, if Singapore was during the day it would not be even considered as a rival for Monaco!

but can you imagine a Monaco GP at night now that would be a thing of Beauty :cloud9:

Nah, I'd be missing the camera panning across the yachts with all the beautiful people on them

personally im not a fan of monaco anymore. Its the carnival act of the season, cars leading a parade in a lovely place but very poor racing.

I already prefer Singapore because the race was a good one, something not seen at monaco for time
