I just spent a couple weeks in Switzerland and thus watched the GP Valencia there (with my mom). And I have to say the following about their coverage. Granted, they (RTL) do a lot of coverage, even have their own cameras on site, have experts (Niki Lauda, e.g.) talking/commenting, BUT, it was BORING to listen to them. Bone dry, no humor, no irony, no entertainment value, just pure matter-of-factly commentary. I very much missed Speed TV's sarcasm and joking around (when appropriate, i.e., when DC talks about his hole-proof undies, e.g.). Very much the same has to be said about the Austrian (and Swiss) coverage - boring to the nth degree
For this and other reasons, I'm glad I'm home again. With lots of Swiss chocolate in my two suitcases

It was nice seeing family and old friends again after 9 years. But it didn't feel like home, more like a memory of home.

I see. I've not had that experience as yet, possibly because I've not been away for as long, come back home at Christmas and summer time and because Irish and Scottish cultures are similar. The things you have to do to become an academic.

In terms of the coverage, I personally prefer analysis, but there's nothing wrong with the odd joke here and there. Having watched ITV's coverage, I'd happily watch RTL, however dry it may be. Overall, I feel Formula One coverage is poor. A lot more information should be made available to fans.

And I haven't even touched on the commercials yet! EXTREMELY long breaks, just horrible. During the last 10 laps or so they have at least the decency to do that pic-in-pic thing - why not all the time??
Anyway, in terms of analysis, RTL sucks compared to Steve Matchett at Speed TV. He's fantabulous, he spots things nobody else finds and only when they show a replay and he points it out again, you see he saw it right. Amazing! For technical and tactical issues, he's the best.

Ah, I get you know. There is only analysis and the analysis they do have is poor by comparison to Speed TV. The breaks with ITV's coverage are also shocking. Breaks and pretty frequent and fairly long. They don't have breaks in the final ten of fifteen minutes of the race, but they used to. They changed that absurd policy several years ago after numerous complaints and a massive uproar after the 2005 San Marino Grand Prix's exciting finish was missed due to a commercial break!

And on top of it all: they didn't show the interviews after the race. For the first time according to my mom - they used to show them and translate them into German. But not the only time *I* was watching. What BS!
