An interesting discussion point, if not contraversial - just wondered whether anyone else felt that Hermann Tilke designs did not lend themselves to overtaking in F1. Take Valencia's Street Circuit, no real overtaking areas, just flowing corners where current F1 cars are unable to follow one another closely.

Other circuits of his include:

i dont think you should be so harsh on him, street circuits he can only design with what is there to work with from the city layout.

Should F1 drop Tilke tracks that aren't working well for the sport?

Turkey's alright, this year's race there was good, we should wait until Singapore has taken place, but generally Tilke's tracks are bad and he has pretty much killed 2 classic tracks being Hockenheim and the classic Osterreichring. The A-1 Ring is ok, but pales into nothing against the classic that forced 3 restarts in 1987 and where Mansell bumbed his head on a girder after the race.

I am now dreading whatever he plans to do to Donington.

Tilke usually designs his track to allow for overtaking but I think the lack of it is down mostly to the huge gulf between the top 2 cars and everyone else. In the GP2 races they are plenty of overtaking maneuvers on the Tilke tracks thank to the fact the cars are pretty much the same. Once the new regs come in next year hopefully overtaking increases

I agree. Even at Catalunya, which is notoriously boring in F1, I found the GP2 race to be quite enjoyable. This is why Formula 1 needs budget capping.

That could be arranged... just need to make up with that old Jerez town mayor from 1997.
Could always just sack Tickle Tilke... design the tracks myself.

Don't see why not, my friends tried to design tracks... but they were just dumb, your's is possible and believable... AND 10x better than anything Mr Tickle could design
And as for a proper light show at Sinagpore... get those guys on the right... maybe a few of the Disney light parade floats...

I remember that when you tried to design a Sheffield street circuit.

If you had a Sheffield circuit today and brought the cars up near Meadowhall, they wouldn't be able to get distracted by the iconic twin cooling towers anymore as they got demolished this morning.

I believe we drafted up a new FIA a while back Ewan and one of the regulations was for the F1 fans to design new tracks and Tilke to be punished for his crimes against F1, and stewards decisions to be made by members of this forum in a quick chat session.

To me, Tilke's tracks are very "samey"; you can always tell a track designed by him. That's a bad thing, for the lack of variety makes life much easier for the drivers and teams, which makes the races boring and drains away the levels of excitement for the fans. No matter how good his circuits may be, the people designing the tracks need to change. Besides, I'm sure that Tilke is not the only one in the entire planet who can design a decent Formula One track. Overall, I think Tilke's circuits have generally been mediocre. Turkey is good and Valencia has the potential to be good, but the rest have been poor. The sport itself has to take some blame as well, however. The costs of Formula One are insane, Ecclestone doesn't care about the show, so long as he gets his cash, and paranoia about safety have also damaged the entertainment value of the show.

It's a shame we can't bring John Hugenholtz back from the dead, he designed circuits like Zandvoort and Suzuka.
