Watching the Silverstone Classic on Motors TV this weekend who appeared as a guest commentator but Murray ( cannot get it right ) Walker. After the start ( " and it's a Go Go Go........") followed by the usual gaffs he ended up by saying that the "number 10 car" that was in the picture, when to everybody else, the car had '11' on the side.
It was then that I realised how much I do not miss him - James Allen is dreadful with his screaming and trying to emmulate Walker with things like " he WINNNNNNNNS " but Walker back - no way. As a fountain of knowledge on motor racing he has few equals but please do not commentate.

I wonder if Murray was doing it deliberately because he was well known for it? But then we have to remember he's in his 80's...

I'll tell you, Toby Moody did a very good job on Motors TV's coverage of the SIlverstone classic

Toby Moody does a good job on all forms of motorsport
I watch both the ITV coverage of races and the Motors,Eurosport coverages. Watching Le Mans again this year on Eurosport brings home the fact that there are a lot of good commentators out there both knowledgeable and listenable.
I do wonder who makes the decisions as to who commentators will be - I don't think that either Motors or Eurosport use inferior commentators for all forms of motosport including all the forms of motorcycle racing.
My personal favourite was always Ben Edwards - he used to be with John Watson and proved a good team.
James Allen when he was in the pits when Walker was commentating was fine - did a good job. As soon as he took over from Walker he went into idiot mode and tried to be a Murray Walker, shouting , overstressing words and getting things wrong - if he was just natural he would be fine. We have a fine team with Steve Rider, Martin Brunble and Mark Blundell - you almost feel that they could do the job on their own.
I expect we'll end up with a Scotsman of some sort - after all they run this bloody country and you cannot turn the TV on without hearing the accent all over the place - no I am not anti-Scot just making a valid point.

Steve Rider is a tool. The guy must be in love with Hamilton, as evidenced by the way he looks at him during interviews etc. Blundell, whilst a decent guy, has flashes of bias towards Hamilton and his "Blundellisms" are pretty embarrassing.

I think you're getting Steve Rider mixed up with Jim Rosenthal. :D

What F1 coverage REALLY needs is Tony Jardine back.

Welll I get the whole three of them mixed up Rider,Rosenthal,Jardine:rolleyes: All boring and Blundell talks rubbish. Brundle is the only one I like to listen to.

Yip. What I meant to say was Steve Rider. I'll edit it now.

I agree. A proper TV studio would be nice as well.

Brundle is the only one I like to listen to.

As much as I like Brundle, even he makes gaffes as a commentator, for instance, missing some pieces of information. At Canada neither Allen or Brundle even noticed that Rosberg got a stop-go penalty. As a viewer, I was left completely clueless as to what happened to him.

I think most commentators make mistakes. Rosberg penalty was a bit of a howler, but end of the day the likes of Brundles usually hit the mark.
No Brundle this weekend tho

I think when anyone says they want Murray back they mean the Murray of the past, still a great character but is getting on a bit which is probably why he retired as he did put a lot of energy into his cmmentary.

No Brundle! Who's gonna be helping Allen on Sunday? (please don't tell me Blundell, although just as a one off the comedy value could be priceless, they'll end up fighting in the commentary box over who loves Hamilton the most.)

And at Fuji neither of them notice he retired with an electrical problem until Louise Goodman had found him.
