Alonso defends Hamilton over 2008 F1 form.
Tue 08 Jul, 07:08 AM

Double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso springs to the defence of former McLaren-Mercedes team-mate and bitter 2007 rival Lewis Hamilton, insisting the British Grand Prix winner is not driving badly in his second season in the top flight this year.

Fernando Alonso has dismissed any notion that his former McLaren-Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton is making more mistakes in his second season of Formula One in 2008, insisting the young Briton has simply been 'a little bit unlucky'.

Though he got his title challenge back on-track with a supreme performance in the British Grand Prix at Silverstone last weekend, Hamilton's form in recent weeks had been patchy at best, with a litany of calamities that saw him clout the back of defending world champion Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari under a red light in the Montreal pit-lane and subsequently receive a drive-through penalty for a controversial overtaking move on Sebastian Vettel in the Scuderia Toro Rosso in France.

Though the pair famously did not get on in 2007, Alonso is quick to back his former arch-rival, arguing that the 23-year-old is not making more errors in year two.

"The second year is more difficult," the Spaniard is quoted by the Daily Telegraph, "but I don't think he has made more mistakes. It's just that this is Formula One. It is not an easy sport, and sometimes you are a little bit unlucky and you lose a couple of points.

"With the lights in Canada, you brake one metre earlier and you don't crash, and you get some points. It is these small details and some unlucky moments that put you out of the points."

The double F1 world champion did add in an interview with Spanish newspaper Diario AS, however, that he would not relish a replay of his 2007 campaign, after Hamilton recently admitted that he missed his duels with Alonso from last year and wanted someone to push him that much again.

"No," the 26-year old Oviedo-born star urged when asked if he felt the same way, "because I truly believe that the duels were not entirely fair.

"I do not have very good memories of how things were. This year has been a difficult one for me in terms of results, but it has been incredibly enjoyable."

Never thought I'd see this coming. Good for Alonso.

Me either, showed a lot of maturity.

Umm, he said "I do not have very good memories of how things were.". I would be surprised if he wanted to go back there, especially only a year after.

Yeah I think McLaren are missing him, so I can actually see that happening, but I doubt it.

Thats for sure, I wonder what Hammy thinks of this.

I though so at the beginning of article, but later part with Alonso's opinion on his and Lewis' duelling convinced me he is not targeting in that direction.

Though it would be interesting to see them again in equally competitive cars.

wasnt lewis saying the other week that he misses Alonso? do you reacon.....there in love?

Actually it would make sence if he went back to mclaren as he had a 3 year contract and there was no real word that the contract has been broken. also maybe mclaren punished him for a year in the renault (it hurt for me to say that) with a deal to see hiekki swap over. then bring him back for one more year in 2009. It did make me wonder at the time as hiekki was brought up by renault but went so easy... its all clicking together.

could be pap though :cloud9:

Lets be honest though, It's not like Hammy and Alonso never got on before it all kicked off on the track. But of course on the track is where all the important stuff happens!

Alonso is a class act and always has been. He was totally misunderstood in the 2007 season but you can see that the man doesn't hold a grudge. He needs a championship winning car next season and this season in the wilderness has made him more hungry than ever for another world title.
