ITV commented during the buildup to the race about the image of Formula 1 being pretty damaged by Mad Max and also the processional race in Spain (which isn't uncommon), but apart from Australia, EVERY race this year has been a procession, something we thought we would see less of despite the TC ban and despite the great season opener in Melbourne. What's gone wrong??

The answer's easy - aerodynamic junk - the reason why it's getting banned as well next year, in a last ditch attempt for success in the "aerodynamic era", teams like BMW and co are plastering even more aerodynamic junk onto the cars making overtaking even more impossible.

Roll on 2009, this is going to end up being a season worse than 2002 and 2004 at this rate and those 2 seasons were what put me off F1 in the first place and I don't want to end up losing interest in this season. :(

the "freeze" on engine development coupled with the 19k rpm limit also plays into the precession train you talk of, while removing the aero will help i think without the extra power differences between teams, the cars are all pretty level on the power department so overtaking still might be just as hard next year.

Hopefully that won't be the case next year, because in the 70's just about everyone but Ferrari were using the same engines - Cosworth's V8 DFV - and there was action back then.

But I wish they would get rid of this stupid engine freeze too.

Correct. Although the aerodynamics are the biggest problem, engine development is another factor that will reduce overtaking. The FIA have done too little too late. It was clear for sometime now what impact the cars' reliance on aerodynamic grip has been having on the sport, but the FIA didn't bother to do anything about it. Then, several years overdue, when they did start to the take issue seriously, the "solutions" they came up with where absurd and went against some of Mosley's principles of reducing costs!

I'll say again for the umteenth time in as many years, get rid of the aerodynamic trash, make the cars wider, bring back slicks, and place more focus on the cars' power plants, i.e. the engine. (I would also like to see semi-automatic gears go, but that will never happen.)

The FIA are missing a trick with the engine, too. They could introduce more "green" sources of power and the teams could engage in a development race in this area. The FIA, therefore, could proclaim to the world how Formula One is doing its bit to counter the evils of global warming and try to make the sport more interesting.

put an engine boost button on i say!

That's what all this hoo-hah about the KERS device is supposed to do next year, using it like a push to pass button to give the car more HP temporarily.
#42847
is gonna be the only way to get passing done, would be interesting if it was time limited per race, to use it for defence or attack?

Hopefully it could be used for either, that's how it's done in A1GP with their power-to-pass function. All the cars in that series use exactly the same chassis, tyres and engines but you still get quite a lot of action in that as the winning cars have the best drivers and are set-up the best. So on that note, if KERS works like A1's power-to-pass function we shouldn't worry about the engine freeze and 19k rev limiting that bud pointed out. :)

This bickering about how boring F1 is, is frankly stupid. Stop watching F1 please, because I'm tired of reading these complaints.

Likewise, one could turn round and tell you not to read those comments. ;)

I do agree that it is annoying, but it's also the state that the sport is getting to. I find that most of the excitement at the moment is coming from the mid-field. But that isn't a bad thing, because an on-track battle for position, no matter which part of the field it is occurring, is nice to watch.

Yeah I'd agree, I think we've all seen boring races, but F1 is still exciting even if some of the racing can be poor. I mean look at Qually it's usually action packed. Even if they didnt improve the racing I'd still walk, it's still more interesting than other forms of motor sports even if they have more overtaking

I'm sorry, but this is mild in comparison to the annoying McLaren/Ferrari flaming that neutrals like myself have to put up with. Likewise if you don't like what I'm posting, just ignore it. We all love F1, which is why we're here and whilst I put up with a couple of the more tedious race last year, all races so far bar Australia have been pretty poor, something of a total contrast to the thriller in Melbourne.

Then I could turn round and say that no one honestly gives a damn about their comments. But thanks agreeing with me.

I guess you'll need to sit tight till 09... mind you even that might not help the races.
