It's all shrouded in secrecy, so until we get some more specifics or until somebody protests the design (how does it work?) because Renault is suddenly winning, this story won't have legs.

the design itself isnt going to be questioned but whether they obtained the design from the McLaren intellectual property.

You aren't going to get that under the current FIA structure.

Personally, I think that everything about the whole spying affair should be dropped. And most of it will be of significantly less use come next year.

McLaren J-Damper"The Novel Suspension Piece"

Postby f1usa »

Do you think the J-damper is playing a part in the performance increase of Ferrari and BMW. Remember Renault spy-gate, and the blueprint of a damper that Renault engineers didn't understand. Did Renault get smarter or just copy a J-damper for the Spanish GP. Mods, I didn't post links, J-damper info is not even front page.

Toyota and Renault, both being ten times more guilty than McLaren, get off scott free, whilst McLaren are shafted. The witch hunt is truly over, for now. It's a wonder nothing has been said about the standard ECU yet. But, then again, McLaren don't look to be competing with Ferrari thus far, so any such complaints are unnecessary for the moment.

My own view is that Renault certainly did glean a lot of information from McLaren, and Alonso's return to Renault saw him shine light on a few of those pieces of information. It's very strange how Renault claimed not understand the J-damper design, but now they are the foremost authority on it. It's also very strange how they are so reluctant (more so than is normal in the sport) to speak about it. Something to hide, perhaps?

Renault were ten times more guilty. Whilst three people in McLaren were involved in its spy scandal, Renault's top brass were well aware the team had McLaren data and were actively analysing it.

As for the J-damper, I don't believe Renault came up with this revolutionary idea themselves. As I said, they didn't even recognise a J-damper from McLaren's drawings last season, but when Alonso turns up, the car suddenly has one, and Renault are petrified of saying anything about it. Sure, if everybody on the grid has had one for ages, Renault should have nothing to hide.

No doubt if this story were about McLaren, the FIA would have the team under investigation after this story.
