A mulligan for everybody

Postby darwin dali »

The rule tweak, ensuring that each driver will not lose ten grid places or be sent to the back of the grid for his first engine change of the season, was apparently agreed at the team principals' recent meeting with Mosley in Paris.

It must now be ratified by the World Motor Sport Council, but this is imminently likely.

"It was agreed that each team could have one engine failure per car without penalty during the 2008 season," Mosley wrote in a letter seen by some media outlets.

"This would be the first engine failure suffered by each car," he clarified.

How about one engine for the entire season? That'll bring down the costs

I think it's a good idea, I alway's wondered why a driver/team should be penalized 10 grid spot's due to something they have absolutely no control over. Human's can control their behavior, machine's cannot!

One engine for the entire season? Bring it on that would be cool, who would be the first to utilize the Bugatti V16?

It was introduced as a deterrent so that teams wouldn't bypass the regulation that no special quali engines be used.

I thought the rule of that an engine must survive a certain number of race's plus qualifying eliminated that scenario? I'm I not paying attention once again?

Yes, but a special quali engine could have been effectively reintroduced through the backdoor - teams run the quali and then change the engine claiming it's not working properly. If there was no grid penalty, you bet this kind of thing would have been going on quite a bit.

Well, it doesn't really matter whether it's a 'real' engine problem or strategic - you only get to do it once without penalty, sorta like a wild card. You play it unnecessarily, you may miss it when you really need it. In fact, I could imagine that a team 'saves' the mulligan (if they have a perfect engine season) until the last couple of races and if the championship is close, use the mulligan to gain an advantage.

Ahh, remember season 00, 01, 02 when lap records would fall on each qualifying session. Light fuel, throw away 950hp v10, qualifying tyres. That was entertainment.
