As a result of the investigations carried out by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile it has become clear that Ferrari information was more widely disseminated within McLaren than was previously communicated. McLaren greatly regrets that its own investigations did not identify this material and has written to the World Motor Sport Council to apologise for this.

McLaren has written a letter to the FIA which in the interests of transparency it is publishing with this press statement. That letter speaks for itself and the sentiments expressed in it are sincerely held by McLaren. McLaren has also written to the World Motor Sport Council to apologise that it has taken an FIA investigation to find this information and have expressed our deep regret that our understanding of the facts was improved as a result of the FIA inspection rather than our own investigations. McLaren has recognised that this entire situation could have been avoided if we had informed Ferrari and the FIA about Nigel Stepney's first communication when it came to our attention. We are, of course, embarrassed by the successive disclosures and have apologised unreservedly to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

To avoid even the possibility of Ferrari information influencing our performance during 2008, McLaren has offered a set of detailed undertakings to the FIA which will impose a moratorium on development in relation to three separate systems. During the course of these incidents, McLaren has conducted a thorough review of its policies and procedures regarding the recruitment and management of staff. The proposals arising from this thorough review have been disclosed to the FIA and McLaren has agreed to demonstrate that all of these policies and procedures have been fully implemented.

McLaren wish to make a public apology to the FIA, Ferrari, the Formula 1 community and to Formula 1 fans throughout the world and offer their assurance that changes are now being made which will ensure that nothing comparable to what has taken place will ever happen again. McLaren have also agreed to pay the costs incurred by the FIA for their investigation.

McLaren now wishes to put these matters behind it and to move forward focusing on the 2008 season.

Well, I have a number of things I would like to say about this.

I believe the team could be saying this out of fear of being docked points or even not being allowed to compete next season. In other words, although it isn't entirely true, swallowing some pride will be for the greater good of the team. (I'm not saying that's true, but it's a very real possibility.)

In any case, the team has accepted the blame, issued a full and frank apology, is paying the full costs of the investigation, is offering not to develop the areas the document outlined, and is expecting nothing in return other than being able to go racing next season, which is the best thing for McLaren and the whole Formula One circus.

The FIA and Ferrari have done enough damage. Although certain people in McLaren did wrong, those two played upon it. They've had their fun and got their own back on Ron Dennis for the breakaway series etc. It's now time to move on for the good of everybody. Sadly, I have suspicion Mosley, who has the power, won't let go. In that case, will McLaren look the better having offered this statement.

That's a good point if they continued to fight the FIA would have had a vendetta against the team and the slightest mistake would have been met with the strictest penalty.

As much as it pains me to say, the FIA have the power. McLaren can take them on and, yeah, they may get the moral victory, but the team not competing next year would mean McLaren would be finished. Faced with that, even I'd put my dislike of Mosley and the FIA to one side and tell what they want to hear. Hopefully it's enough to talk them round, but, like I say, they could ignore it and go ahead with whatever they're thinking of doing.

It was about time for this Mea Culpa - there was not much more left for McLaren/RD other than to go to Canossa, which they did with this letter. Good on them. Hopefully it won't be too little too late and we can truly put this sorry example of mismanagement of a crisis in an F1 team behind us.

McLaren think they are sneaky little bar stewards dont they. They seem to over and under exaggerate greatly to manipulate the public and there own fans even. What they said about the Renault scandal and now this.

Good news is the circus will 'probably' be closed now...

More good news is that this clears the main difference between the Renault and the Mclaren cases in that Mclaren had to receive a 2nd probe, a fine and threats to come forward with information and cooperation.

Now, with Mclaren admitting this it also admits that Stepney, De la Rosa and Alonso were not the ONLY stray sheep in Mclaren as it was portrayed. This is no small deal... and may further explain why Mclaren is looking for a driver.

Yes McLaren fan I also find it hard to believe you can still blame Ferrari and the FIA even after Ron Dennis has clearly stated his errors and offered a very public apology.

"McLaren has recognised that this entire situation could have been avoided if we had informed Ferrari and the FIA about Nigel Stepney's first communication when it came to our attention."

It's time to put all this behind us and start spreading the love a little more. Roll on 2008!

I've already explained my reasons for saying what I did and continue to stand by them. You should also note that I did not just blame Ferrari-FIA.

From autosport.com:

FIA moves to close spying affair

By Pablo Elizalde Thursday, December 13th 2007, 18:05 GMT

The FIA is looking to put an end to F1's spying affair after expressing its intention to cancel February's meeting of the World Motor Sport Council.

Earlier this month, the governing body did not clear McLaren's 2008 car and deferred a decision to 14 February's meeting of the WMSC.

However, on Thursday McLaren apologised to the FIA and Ferrari, and accepted the Italian team's data had penetrated deeper into their team than suspected at first.

The FIA has responded to that saying president Max Mosley has asked the WMSC for permission to cancel February's meeting and consider the matter closed.

"In the light of McLaren's public apology and undertakings, the FIA President has asked the members of the World Motor Sport Council for their consent to cancel the hearing scheduled for 14 February 2008 and, in the interests of the sport, to consider this matter closed," said the FIA in a statement.

The FIA also made public a copy of the report by the FIA Technical Department to the World Motor Sport Council.

An FIA spokesman said an answer from the WMSC should come some time next week.

Very surprising but welcome nonetheless. Although 2007 won't be forgotten, I'm more interested in moving on, at long last.

You were trying to insinuate that Ron Dennis fell on his sword for the good of his team.

This wasn't a forced confession, it was an admission of guilt.

And yes, Max did the right thing. I'm the only one on this forum who stood up for him.

Max is corrupt and Ron had no option if he wanted to compete next year. Look at the info Renault had and no punishment. Double standards!
