There's been so many

Prost, Senna, Stewart, Moss, Fangio, Hunt, Schumey, Alesi, McLaren, etc.. To narrow down to five would take me for ever.

Also with the evolution of the sport would Moss have been able to bead Scott Speed? Who knows?!?

I have a lot more respect for the older drivers when they were racing around in tin cigars, compared today's cars that are crash tested, with HANS devices, Traction Control, wings, winglets, cross-ply tyres, etc... all to make the cars easier to drive.

Right, a vague top 5, in the last 20 years...

Senna,
Prost,
Alesi,
M Schumacher,
Coulthard (he's been around for 13 years (count 'em) so can't be that shabby)

Ooh, can I add Patrese in there somewhere?

Damn, this game is too hard!!

Schumacher is a Formula One great, certainly the most businessman-like Formula One driver of all time. He did what it took to win and he capitalised on certain situations. Fair enough. I can't fault him for that. However, he is not the greatest Formula One driver of all time. Senna, Clark, Prost, Fangio etc. are the ones who get the honour of vying for that place.

In my opinion, Schumacher gets credit for the wrong thing. He is one of the greatest drivers, however, is the greatest leader in Formula One. He went to Ferrari, got in the people he knew well and were good, got the team built around him and got everybody in the team working as hard as they could for him. That is his real achievement. Senna cemented together teams with his charisma, however, didn't get the opportunity to get in who he wanted to run the team.

For me, the greatest driver is Senna. Prost could have been, however, the fact he was so woeful in wet and/or unpredictable conditions lowers his standing. Fangio was great, however, I don't think he had the edge over his rivals as people say: Moss could have had three titles and Fangio could have been short of at least one or two. Some of the greatest drivers are people that have nothing or little. Alesi was a fantastic and driver and deserved a lot more than one measly win. Who knows what may have been if he had taken Williams' offer instead.

why is everyone forgetting Sterling Moss.... Fangio was one of the greatest, and the only driver who's ability he feared was Moss!!!

Why does everyone seem to equate championships with greatness, and HOW can you compare the likes of Schumacher with Senna, Prost, Lauda, Stewart, Clark, Rindt, Moss, Fangio, Nuvolari?? there IS NO greatest of all time, only greatest of their eras, as no era can be comopared with another, and drivers can rarely be compared driectly... how can you compare senna with schumacher? MS was still new to F1 when senna died. compare senna with Fangio, HOW??? what similarities where there to compare??
