Mercedes has been allowed to keep its oil burn system set to its current maximum limits. This will be of huge benefit to Mercedes to be able to keep its special qualli modes for Q3 and also high power race modes for the rest of the season. With the races being won on Saturdays this puts Mercedes in the drivers seat for the championships. Their competitors if they can even burn oil for extra performance at all will be regulated to two thirds of Mercedes limit. Stuttgart owns the FIA it would seem.

This also means that Toto's post race comments in Spa were a lie. Toto stated that his teams engines would be the same as his customer engines and the new rules would apply to Mercedes as well. According to this article the FIA gave Merc this allowance in July so Toto knew a month ago that this was not true.

"The FIA has confirmed that Mercedes will be allowed to run its latest engine at a higher level of oil burn for the remainder of the season, following the German manufacturer’s move to introduce it at the Belgian Grand Prix.

With a new oil burn limit of 0.9 litres per 100km coming into force at the Italian Grand Prix, Mercedes pre-empted that cut-off point by bringing its fourth and final power unit into play in Belgium last weekend.

According to an FIA technical directive issued by the FIA in July, engines introduced before Monza would be allowed to run at an oil burn level of 1.2 litres per 100km."

Hold on... wasn't the whole premise of the hybrid engine supposed to be that it was eco-friendly??
How is burning oil eco-friendly? What am I missing here?

Oh, wait... I know... Schumi's records """must""" be toppled, come hell or high water!!
Maybe the FIA should move to Texas where there's plenty of water to go around!!
Or, maybe Mercedes should, since they seem to be in need of dousing!!

Merc have been burning lubricating oil (complete with unregulated additives!) for performance for many years, slowly the truth is being exposed. Despite their previous denials it is now clear. And they even have a special preferential oil burning rule just for themselves!

I am not sure how the FIA can justify having two different performance regulations on the track at the same time. Baffling.

And yes Sagi, Mercedes has always self praised on how fuel efficient and green their engine set was. And here we see that it burns more oil than a two stroke!

Yep, as they said there - 'huge qually advantage', and 'cheat'.

What I don't understand is why the FIA would change rules/directives mid-season!!
And, IF it was ABSOLUTELY necessary as a SAFETY PRECAUTION, why would they
make it such a discrepancy? Sure, it's "only" .3 L/ 100km; but, that could very well
mean a .3 second advantage which translates into a WDC by the end of the season!!

So... how come I don't hear any shouts about a Mercedes-FIA partnership??
Oh, wait... that would be a rhetorical question!!

Why aren't they thinking about the fans? My favourite years are the ones that are really tight all the way down to the last race. This year has been really good from that point of view, up until now. I could not really call who is going to win this year. But this new ruling is surely going to make the rest of the year a bit of a procession rather than a race at the front.

Is that just me or are everyone else seeing this as a problem as well?

Most of us will see it as a problem, John!

Unfortunately, for us, those who are fans of Mercedes are going to argue that
it's because of all the years of research and development that they're in front.

Of course, they also conveniently forget that Mercedes was researching and
developing their engine WHILE ""helping"" the FIA develop new regulations
regarding engines... Convenience all around!!
