...We now head for Abu Dhabi and the double points on offer for the final race of the season. The priority for the Scuderia will be to maintain fourth place in the Constructors’ championship ahead of McLaren, whom it currently leads by 49 points. Theoretically, the Prancing Horse can still catch third place Williams, whom it trails by 44 points, but the hierarchy among the teams at the moment suggests that would take an unusual set of circumstances.

Maranello, 17 November
Sunday sees the sixth running of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The race has always been held over 55 laps of the 5.554 kilometre-long Yas Marina circuit. This event in the United Arab Emirates will be the first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix to have double points attributed. In fact, while it’s never happened before in this category that one race is worth more than another, it’s a formula in use in other forms of racing as both the Indy 500 in the USA and the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance event, count for double points. The first race in Abu Dhabi was held in 2009 and was won by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull.

Jinxed track.
The Yas Marina track has never looked kindly on Scuderia Ferrari, which has not managed to win here, while the team also has to deal with the bitter memory of the 2010 race. That year, Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso came to this the final race as leader of the classification with a lead of 8 and 15 points over Red Bull’s Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel respectively. A strategic error dropped the Spaniard to the back of the pack and in the end, it was the German who took the title, beating Fernando by 4 points. The other years. Over the following seasons, Ferrari picked up two second places courtesy of Alonso, in 2011 behind Lewis Hamilton and in 2012 behind Kimi Raikkonen, that day marking the Finn’s first win since his Formula 1 comeback.

Classy curtain-raiser.
This year, just ten days after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the Yas Marina circuit provides the backdrop to the highlight of the year for fans and followers of Ferrari. From 3 to 6 December, the track hosts the Finali Mondiali, which features the Formula 1 team putting on a show, while the racing action sees the three Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli series runners (Europe, North America and Asia Pacific) in a fight for their respective championship titles as well as for the title of World Champion, open to competitors of all three series.

The Championship 2014 will be decided in the United Arab Emirates, where on the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi capital will take place the 19th and last Race of the season with a double score over other appointments Gladden The city is located on the island of Rim in the Persian Gulf just 250 m from the coast, while the track meanders on the artificial island Yas, including golf courses, theme parks and luxury hotels. Yas Marina is part of the Formula 1 calendar in 2009 and is a facility designed by Hermann Tilke. The permanent circuit is 5,554 m long and lies at sea level: consists of twenty-one curves and is characterized by a curious pit exit that has an underpass below the main straight. The Gp takes place in the late afternoon over a distance of 55 laps and ends at dusk, when the asphalt temperature should be reduced gradually, making it much varia tyre strategy. Abu Dhabi has five fast strokes and five lenses with three points to overtake the three chicane. There are two sections where you can use the mobile wing (DRS) to overtake: back straight, between 7 and 8 curve and curve in the stretch between 10 and 11. The path requires a high downforce able to guarantee maximum grip in many slow corners.

SOFT AND MEDIUM COMPOUNDS CHOICES

The tires chosen by Pirelli P Zero Red are supersoft and P Zero rubber Yellow soft, already used in Monaco, Canada, Austria, Germany and Singapore. The soft is a balanced between tire performance and duration of mixing "high working range". The supersoft, instead, is the softer compound, like "low working range", ideal for the slow and twisty circuits, even under the asphalt temperature high, not when you need maximum mechanical grip. The Supersoft has an extremely fast heating time which makes it ideal for qualifying, with a greater decline than the Soft and could be ideal for use on this circuit at the end of the race, at dusk, in the presence of lower asphalt temperatures. The difference in lap time between the two compounds should be about 0 "8, but the adherence of the circuit will be evolving over the weekend and will depend on the temperature of the asphalt. Yas Marina circuit is pretty challenging for the engine because it is used at full capacity for 60% of the time, while it is less severe for the broadcast, since the Wintax simulation of Macintyre is 3,482 changed within a Gp. The reference time is that obtained by Mark Webber Red Bull-Renault RB9 in 2013 in qualification 1 ' 39 "957.

A LAP

1 SECTOR

Start line – 4 Curve

Along the pit straight to the detached 1 curve at the top speed of 305 kph in seventh followed by 1,937 kW braking that slows the car up to 133 mph in third and recharges the battery with 165 kJ. The curve 1 is a right pretty challenging because the pilot is scrambling to find the exact stopping point. Continue slightly uphill towards the 2, a left Curve that precedes a nice fast with a section that includes the curve 3, one right before the curve 4, a left which is between 230 and 250 km/h in fifth and urges both the car driver with very high lateral acceleration. This section requires a good aerodynamic balance to keep the best trajectory.

2 SECTOR

5 – 10 Curve curve

You get to the curve 5 to detached 312 kph in seventh for the second of the four most powerful braking path requires 2,105 kW and allows you to slow down the car up to 134 mph in third. The variant consisting of 5 and 6 Curve, along with hairpin curves represent the section 7 of the circuit that looks for a stadium: these slow corners require good traction to avoid disturbing the ideal trajectory. You exit the hairpin curve 7 to 78 mph in first to get onto the backstraight that is the longest straight section of the track where the motor is used at full load for 14 "7 along the 1,142 m: the car comes to a bit of 334 km/h in eighth (348 km/h with the mobile wing opened), before braking from 2.300 kW which slows the car up to speed of 88 km/h in first in which recharges the battery with 230 kJ. The two curves that follow this section must be carried out to perfection because they bring the penultimate stretch fast track where you can still use the DRS. You exit 9 Curve at a speed of 75 km/h in first gear to start toward 10 Curve passing under a bridge: is a crease on the left which is a 243 km/h in fifth after which you can use the mobile wing.

SECTOR 3

11 curve – finish line

You get to the curve 11 detached at a speed of 323 km/h in seventh (340 km/h become in eighth standing wake to a single seater with the mobile wing opened). The fold on the left offers an opportunity for overtaking. The release of 11 addressing Curve to 96 km/h in first gear to tackle the chicane that consists of a right, the curve 12, followed by a left, the curve 13, which comes up to 105 km/h in first. After a brief acceleration leads to 14: this is a left squarely to go to 105 km/h on the front. This turns into a fast tract not completely straight, comprising 15 and 16 curves, two folds to 45 degrees right and travel approximately 288 mph in sixth gear that urge the car and driver with an acceleration to 4 g. You get to the curve 17, plucked another right angle, which tackles at 286 mph in sixth, turning around at the port of Yas Marina. From 17 Curve exit 89 km/h before tackling a slow stretch composed of 18 and 19 Curves that are at right angles, passing underneath the Yas hotel Viceroy. The last part consists of 20, a right Curve to which it arrives before the detached of 257 km/h in fifth and from which exit 167 mph in fourth and entering 21 Curve to 242 km/h in fifth and then climb three reports before heading out to 112 km/h in second gear to get on the main straight.

PERFORMANCE AND RELIABILITY

AERODYNAMICS
The Abu Dhabi circuit requires a high downforce due to the presence of many slow corners and efficient aerodynamics to achieve high speeds on the straights. The use of the mobile wing allows increased speeds up to 14 km/h using the preceding car also.

BRAKES
In Abu Dhabi there are four powerful braking at the giro: according to Wintax simulation of Macintyre is not cooling the critical point of the system, how much wear, since discs and calipers are engaged for 22 "on back.

EXCHANGE RATES
Yas Marina is a rather challenging for the transmission: 3,482 changed are needed to cover the race. Although it may seem strange, the gear ratio more stressed is that of first gear, used for 24% of the lap time.

MOTOR
Abu Dhabi is a rather harsh for the engine there are long distance at full load. The circuit of the Emirate leverages the thruster for 60 "a maximum regime, favoring the power unit that manage to recover energy from exhaust gases efficiently, without wasting gasoline. The circuit is sensitive to that weight.

CONSUMPTION
Fuel consumption at Yas Marina is very high because it may take 102 kg of fuel to complete the distance of the race according to Magneti Marelli Wintax simulation, against 100 kg on board for regulation. The single-seater, so must manage the consumption end the race.

ERS
On the track of Abu Dhabi 1,844 kJ can be recovered during braking with the MGU-K and 2,389 kJ in acceleration with the MGU-H for a total of 4,233 kJ per revolution, a value among the highest. Performance contribution of ERS on this circuit is 2 "4 for each lap and can be worth up to 16 km/h top speed.

Marco Mattiacci:

“This race was the epilogue to a difficult season for the team at the track and for all the men and women of the Scuderia back home. It’s the last day of a season that saw the beginning of a technical revolution that required a different approach and work methodologies and it was a year that presented a steep learning curve for all of us.

Unfortunately, the result here in Abu Dhabi reflects the performance level seen in recent races, even though Fernando and Kimi fought all the way as always, showing just what they are capable of. On behalf of the team, I want to congratulate Lewis Hamilton on his fantastic win and I also want to once again thank Fernando, while regretting that we never won the title together. Nevertheless, we had the pleasure of sharing unforgettable moments that are now part of Ferrari history. I also thank Kimi, who this year has patiently dealt with a car that was not easy to manage and I am sure we will soon see him able to express his great talent.

Now we are continuing in a methodical and disciplined fashion with the work behind the scenes in Maranello, so as to give our drivers a competitive car with which we can return as soon as possible to the top level of this sport.”

Pat Fry:

“First of all, we must congratulate Lewis Hamilton for a well-deserved second World Championship title.

For us it was a complicated race from start to finish and our final result was a confirmation of our qualifying performance. Over all 55 laps, both Kimi and Fernando struggled with little reliability problems which affected their cars. Having gained two places at the start, we had to make the first stops very early because of tyre degradation. That put us back out in traffic and unfortunately, our management of the power units and the tyres meant it was difficult to make any overtaking moves.

After such an intense last race now we turn all our attention to the work that awaits us, beginning with next week’s test, aimed at getting started on next season as soon as possible.”

Kimi Raikkonen:

“It was a very difficult race but we knew right from the beginning that this track would be tough for us. The start was good but then, at the first stop, I already lost a few places and from then on I couldn’t move up the order. The car handled well and I had no particular problem, but today we lacked the speed we needed to attack.

All season we have faced a series of difficulties which we put a lot of effort into solving and we learned a lot from that. We know which direction we need to work in to be competitive as soon as possible and I have absolute faith in the team.”

Fernando Alonso:

“Today, my time with Ferrari comes to an end, as does a very tricky season, in which, even if we were unable to do much against the technical dominance of our rivals, we fought all the way to the very end, all of us did our utmost, putting our hearts into it.

Today’s race was difficult to manage but at the same time it was very emotional for me; after five years it’s not easy to say farewell to a team with which I have grown so much over the past five years, both as a driver and as a person. I thank all the Ferraristi for their support. I will miss the team, the fans and Italy.

Even though we are going our separate ways, I feel I have lived through a unique experience which any Formula 1 driver would have loved to have had.”
