McLaren Honda are way ahead on organisation and preparation compared to Ferrari and Renault last year. Thats the benefit of the extra year.

Insiders say the new Honda engine is already close to producing a similar level of performance to the Mercedes turbo hybrid V6 which has dominated Formula 1 this season.
But the Japanese company may need to find considerably more performance ahead of the new season if it is to be competitive, as Mercedes are said to have made significant steps forward with their power unit for 2015.
Even under rules restricting development, sources say Mercedes have improved their engine enough to translate into a performance gain of about a second a lap for next season.

If the McHonda is currently where Merc were, then it would mean the Honda engine slots in just behind the Merc and way ahead of the other 2 - that makes a lot of sense when looking at the resources of each engine maker. Merc - Honda -big gap - Renault - Ferrari. The only surprise is why Renault are ahead of Ferrari

Now it makes sense why Alonso was chased at all costs, If Honda are a second behind Merc, then depending on the job McLaren and their new recruits have done on the chassis, we could see Alonsos McLaren close to and maybe interfering with Nico next season

Yes. Just what I was thinking. If that engine is as good as that then an Alonso is needed.

I wish Alonso the same level of success in his team exodus Hamilton had with his.

Although he is probably the most disruptive personality out there as witnessed by the 6 teams who all rejected any moves for him, he definetely deserves much much more than he can find at Ferrari, more success less passion.

Its funny how things always seem to gravitate towards the best talent no matter what happens at the steak dinners and bigotry towards nationalities etc.

Alonso and Lewis, the only 2 in their own class on the grid appear to have organically merged with the 2 car makers with all the resources and money and who can put together an engine worthy of real competition, which we have missed from Alonso this year. Early days but Macca and Merc could be the competition for the next era, supplying customer teams for a B spec, and the also rans inbetween the two moaning about unlimited developement and threatening to bring bck V8s or V12s with an extra exhaust just to keep the petrol bunrning and blowing the wing mirror even when the car is on the grid.

I believe Alonso is the best driver on the grid right now; Ferrari have just dropped the ball in the development race, hence why Alonso is looking to move!

As for the Honda engine, I'll wait and see, we have nothing to suggest relative performance other than timescale, maybe it'll be better than Mercedes engine, maybe it will slot into second place or maybe it will be on par with Ferrari and Renault, we simply don't know and won't know truly until we reach AUS next season!

This thread can remain dormant till the end of 2015 season when we can safely say how good the Honda engine is

Or, just like last year with the Merc thread, some of us can discuss and debate the available info as it comes out and others can avoid speculation, extrapolation and inferences by avoiding the thread

Who is saying you can not debate and speculate? I expressed my opinion, plain and simple! At this point, we don't even have a race speed run on the books.

We have lots of info, mcLaren will now know the difference between the two engines, so will Honda and so far they sound on the right track - reading between the lines.

It's also possible Alonso was waiting for the run to see if the numbers match the sim, so if we suddenly hear the confirmation that would mean something.

I am certain the Honda engine is closer to Merc than to the other 2, Honda are a massive firm and the fact the car ran without the problems we saw with the others is enough to be getting on with. It stopped once and was immediately running again and Honda are happy

Anyway just like last year we will soon find out why Alonso made this move and how clues are always out there for those willing to look AND see things

Sounds good, looks fast, fuel efficient, driveable AND reliable - definitely the second best engine on the grid :hehe:

Lets hope Alonso will be driving a good chassis to get them ahead of RBR and Ferrari

Lewis and Alonso going at it again, both in fast cars. Now there's an exciting prospect!

Why did they choose Turvey to drive the car?

Because they don't know which one of Button or Magnussen is driving yet? ;)

Even though Alonso most likely wont be in a Ferrari next year, I hope he does well as he is arguably the best driver on the grid, and certainly in the top 2!

Looks very reliable, it went round that corner twice meaning it's already done double the mileage the Renault did in Jerez.

I would of thought it was better to have someone who could compare it to a modern F1 engine would be better.

I hope he does well, too!! McLaren is lucky to have him back.
I just hope they don't have "more" success than Ferrari!!:whistling:
