Childhood Dream Car

Postby LRW »

When I was a lad, I loved the following car. It was in the centre piece of my posters, alongside the 911 and the Countach.

Ford Sierra Sapphire Cosworth
Image

I remember one day my dad waking me up for school and telling me he'd bought a new car, and he was picking it up today. When I asked what it was, he pointed to the poster of my Sapphire Cosworth and said "that". I nearly pooped my pants. I was so excited all day at school.

So imagine my disappointment when I come home to find a red Sierra Sapphire LX sat in front of the house. (It was still an upgrade on our old Orange Talbot Horizon

Anyway, what were your boyhood / girlhood dream cars?

A while back I had to write a bio for my PCA club, so just copied and pasted the relevant parts for here. it really is a nice feeling to drive the car I lusted after for so long.
I remember picking up a magazine with tons of pictures of the 1974 IROC series, and I instantly fell in love with the 911. I wasn't even speaking English yet, but I knew those cars were special. Later on, my love for Porsche was further cemented watching F1 and the McLaren TAG Porsche engine cars of the mid 80s. By that time I was driving, and the closest thing I got to German engineering was my VW Scirocco. After a lot of years and a lot of reasons not to buy one, two years ago, I got a scraggly 1986 911 coupe that's been put together solely to drive hard.

I've NEVER been a truck person, although when I was a kid I wanted a Chevy s10  Idk why but it may be because my dad had a GMC truck that looked almost identical and I probably just wanted to drive his

Image

Aside from that, I do remember the first car that I lusted after. I was never a car kid either....wow...as a kid I honestly didn't give two $#@!$ about road vehicles. I didn't watch racing or look at car magazines or anything like that. I liked legos and construction vehicles, which now makes me believe I should have gone to school for engineering, on top of the fact that I've fallen in love with formula 1. Anyway, bad tangent. The first car I ever looked at and went, "I have to have one..." was a subaru WRX, probably an early 2000s model like the 2003.

For some reason, I liked hatchback cars as a child (1990s - early 2000s). Ford Fiesta, Ford Escort, Mini, Volkswagen Polo, Golf etc...

When I was a teenager I either wanted a Subura Impreza 22B or a Nissan Skyline GTR (R33).

I liked the Skyline from the R32 before GT was ever released; admittedly it's tuneability in GT to almost 100bhp added to it's appeal...

with 100 bhp, the top speed on that thing must have been insane, like what 112 Mph?

When I was in high school, I first saw one of these; but, never got a shot at one:

This 1968 version is just as gorgeous:

Today, if I had to choose a truck, this would be it, the 2014 Honda Ridgeline:

My opening post was when I was around 10 years old I'd say.

But as I got ro my mid teens and thoughts of my first car came around I become more realistic. I bought my then dream car as my first car, for £500...

Image

Now THAT was a fun car to drive. And surprisingly roomy in the back.
