Lots of new stuff on the F14T. Apparently only Nando ran the new floor in FP1. Hopefully Kimi will get to run it in FP2.

Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso upstaged the mighty Mercedes team by setting the pace in first free practice session of the Canadian Grand Prix weekend on Friday.

Alonso, a winner on the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 2006 and runner-up to world champion Sebastian Vettel last year, lapped the island based track with a best time of 1:17.238 seconds on an overcast morning on the banks of the St.Lawrence river.

Right behind the Spaniard were the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton, a three-times winner in Canada, and his team mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg.

Hamilton was a mere 0.016 of a second down on the top time, with Rosberg third fastest – 0.146 of a second the gap between the top three, who were also the only ones to dip below into the 77 second zone around the circuit on the Ile Notre Dame.

Ferrari had a raft of updates to be tested on the troublesome F14T, and early indications are that they may have found a step up in performance although Kimi Raikkonen was down in ninth, 1.3 seconds slower than his Spanish teammate, but the Finn was unable to use the power unit to its full extent at the start of the session and lost out on track time as a result...

A second new floor arrived after Friday practice. Apparently Nando used the new floor FP1 and Kimi in FP2. So you'd assume they will both have it, as well as a a few other upgrades today. Hopefully we can catch up a bit here.

Not only is Kimi getting a new floor, look what else is coming to get him back on track!!

Ferrari has bolstered Kimi Raikkonen's engineering team in a bid to help the Finn move up the Formula 1 grid this year.

The 2007 F1 world champion has had a challenging start to the 2014 campaign, having struggled more than team-mate Fernando Alonso in getting comfortable with the feel of Ferrari's F14 T under braking and corner entry.

With more work to do to overcome Raikkonen's issues, Ferrari has decided to bring back its test team engineer David Lloyd to a racing role to help Raikkonen from this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix.

Lloyd will help support Raikkonen's race engineer Antonio Spagnolo and other staff in trying to improve the lines of communication between the Finn and the team so as to get a better understanding of what is needed.

Raikkonen has worked well with British engineers in the past, having had a long partnership with Mark Slade at previous teams McLaren and Lotus.

It is undecided yet if the change will be permanent, or will last only a few races until enough progress has been made.

Lloyd originally joined Ferrari from BAR in 2003 as a test engineer, before becoming race operations manager in 2007 after the departure of Nigel Stepney.

He then returned to a role as a test engineer for the Maranello outfit.

I love that Ferrari (under Mattiacci) is being pro-active!!!
