Maranello, 30 December

Everyone at Ferrari has been in a state of anxiety since hearing about Michael Schumacher’s accident. That includes the president, Luca di Montezemolo, who through the Scuderia team principal Stefano Domenicali is in constant contact with the family and those close to the German champion. Montezemolo has offered his encouragement and support at this very difficult time, with the hope that better news will come soon.

Felipe Massa, 2008 F1 world champion, on Twitter: "I'm praying for God to protect you, brother!"

Former F1 driver David Coulthard told the BBC: "As I know Michael from the racetrack, there is no question in my mind that he has the physical ability to take on this challenge. The greatest challenge of his life."

Double F1 world champion Fernando Alonso on Twitter: "Get well soon Michael! Hope to hear some positive news very soon! #strongman"

Former Jordan and HRT driver Narain Karthikeyan on Twitter: "Terrible to hear about M Schumacher's skiing injury. If anyone can pull through this it's you."

Quadruple Indy Car champion Dario Franchitti on Twitter: "My thoughts are with Michael Schumacher and his family. If anyone can pull through this it's him," said Franchitti who is still walking on crutches after a crash in October that ended his racing career.

"Come on Michael, give us one of those race stints at pure qualifying pace to win through, like you used to. You can do it," said Schumacher's former Benetton team mate Martin Brundle.

Former Alpine skiing world champion Luc Alphand: "I'm stunned. Skiing, for me and a lot of people, is a leisure before anything else. He might have hit a rock with his feet and you don't need to go fast to hurt yourself."

Former F1 world champion Jenson Button: "My thoughts are with Michael Schumacher at this tough time.. Michael more than anyone has the strength to pull through this."

Michael Schumacher, retired Formula One champ, critical after skiing fall

Former Benetton team mate Martin Brundle told Sky TV: "He's only a year out of the F1 cockpit but as a driven and competitive person you can't simply switch off and settle down at the end of a long career, you need challenges and achievements to keep the adrenalin flowing. But from what I read he wasn't taking undue risks on the ski slopes, and it seems he's been very unlucky on this one. The need for machinery and speed will always be there, it's inevitable. When I read that Michael had received a blow to the right side of his head I couldn't help but think of Ayrton (Senna), and pondered why these things so often happen to the truly great. I sincerely hope and expect of course that this incident has a much happier ending, and I feel sure that his competitive determination and fitness will give him the best chance."

Schumacher's passion for football is well known and he organised and played in a number of charity matches, with the likes of Brazil's Ronaldo, Pavel Nedved of the Czech Republic and Italian Marco Simone participating.

It was good news to hear about Schumi being "stable" and able to have another op. I know its his birthday tomorrow, so here's hoping he just continues to improve steadily.

Go Schumi.

I mentioned it in the other Schumi thread, but it was so great seeing so many Tifosi gathering outside his hospital just giving their support and good wishes for him.

I didn't have the fortune to be following Ferrari during Schumi's reign; but,
I have seen highlights here and there of significant wins/events. Watching
them all in one place at one time, especially in light of his current fight,
makes me sad to have missed out on an era second to none.

This video is aptly named:

German still in a coma in Grenoble Hospital

Ferrari have issue a special birthday message for Michael Schumacher who turned 45 on Friday.

The German remained in a coma in Grenoble Hospital for a fifth night following his skiing accident on Sunday and fans are planning on a silent tribute in the holiday resort to mark the seven-time World Champion's birth.

"This is a special day for Ferrari and all its fans, as it is Michael Schumacher's birthday," Ferrari's message read.

"At the moment, he is tackling the most important fight of his life and therefore we want to send him very special wishes.

"There have so many wonderful moments we have spent together and we have chosen 72. It's not a random number, as it represents the number of wins Michael achieved with the Scuderia from 1996 to 2006: 72 Grands Prix that gave us and the millions of Prancing Horse fans from all over the world so much pleasure. These were unforgettable moments which, along with his passion, commitment and dedication makes Michael part of the great Ferrari family for ever.

"Everyone at Ferrari, from President Luca di Montezemolo and Team Principal Stefano Domenicali, who are in touch all the time with Michael's family and those closest to him, are continuously watching how his situation evolves. Obviously, today there are double the reasons to wish him all the best.

"Forza Michael!"
