So yesterday I attended the 2007 British MotoGP at Donington. After a 5am start, 100-odd mile journey to a friend's house and then the 1.5 miles walk through pouring rain into the circuit, I was ready for bed! But after consuming the first of three hotdogs I was to have that day, I was ready for the motorbikes.
I'm more of a car person, but I must say that I was blown away by the sheer speed and noise that these machines generate, even in the wet. The bravery of the riders was unbelievable; watching de Angelis fall from his Aprilia through the Craner Curves at 110mph during the 250 race, only to jump back on his bike and finish second behind Dovizioso on the Honda.
Next up was the MotoGP race, where I watched Casey Stoner storm to his fifth victory of the season on his Ducati (which was probably the best sounding bike of the day). Unfortunately for the crowd, which seemed mostly adorned with Rossi/'the Doctor' clothing, the Italian struggled back home in fourth with tyre problems brought on by the drying track.
I finished off the day watching the 125 race, with British hopeful Bradley Smith finishing seventh, just thirteen seconds behind the race winner Pasini on his Aprilia.
Pictures to follow!
