I know that there seems to be a lot of wine lovers on this forum, personally I can not think of anything more pompus than to walk into a Pub and ask for a glass of wine as a bloke.
Anyway back to my original question, am I missing something about the whole wine drinking thing? I am normally a bitter drinker and I just can not see the appeal of wine. However I also feel that I am missing something for some reason.
So why do you drink wine?
Personally I cannot stand the social conditioning that makes people think this sort of thing. 'I'm a bloke therefore I must drink pints of lager / cider'. Why is it pompous to order a glass of wine?!?
I don't and never have liked any sort of beer or lager. Personally I think it tastes disgusting. I don't mind cider so much, and could have a couple of glasses of that. Yet in my youth (late teens - early 20's), I felt pressured into drinking pint after pint of the horrible stuff, because you would be labelled a 'poof' (not my word) by many if you did not confirm. Even a tops or a shandy was unacceptable. Sadly, this is the norm and not the exception in male group company in the UK.
I like the taste of certain types of wine, specifically Spanish and Italian white wines, yet any sort of French, Chilean or Australian wine makes me ill after as little as a glass (must be some sort of intolerance to the type of grape or something).
I don't binge drink at all when I go out socially, and if I am out with the wife I'll have a glass or two of wine. Can you give me a rational reason (that isn't because you think it's pompous - that's not rational) why I should't choose a drink that I actually like?
