I know that there seems to be a lot of wine lovers on this forum, personally I can not think of anything more pompus than to walk into a Pub and ask for a glass of wine as a bloke.

Anyway back to my original question, am I missing something about the whole wine drinking thing? I am normally a bitter drinker and I just can not see the appeal of wine. However I also feel that I am missing something for some reason.

So why do you drink wine?

I think wer're all missing the beauty of Cider on here.

When I'm at the pub I drink bitter / ale nearly ALL the time. I love it.

However, I also like wine, and while it's 2nd in my overall consumption to ale, I still love a glass.

Personally I cannot stand the social conditioning that makes people think this sort of thing. 'I'm a bloke therefore I must drink pints of lager / cider'. Why is it pompous to order a glass of wine?!?

I don't and never have liked any sort of beer or lager. Personally I think it tastes disgusting. I don't mind cider so much, and could have a couple of glasses of that. Yet in my youth (late teens - early 20's), I felt pressured into drinking pint after pint of the horrible stuff, because you would be labelled a 'poof' (not my word) by many if you did not confirm. Even a tops or a shandy was unacceptable. Sadly, this is the norm and not the exception in male group company in the UK.

I like the taste of certain types of wine, specifically Spanish and Italian white wines, yet any sort of French, Chilean or Australian wine makes me ill after as little as a glass (must be some sort of intolerance to the type of grape or something).

I don't binge drink at all when I go out socially, and if I am out with the wife I'll have a glass or two of wine. Can you give me a rational reason (that isn't because you think it's pompous - that's not rational) why I should't choose a drink that I actually like?

It's called taste Jabber. Different people have different tastes, it's how we work. I on the other hand, love BOTH a good brew and a good wine. Na na na na na!

I prefer beer/lager/ale, I'm not a cider drinker.... or a Wurzel... but on occasion I do enjoy a glass of sweet white wine, red wine gives me an instant headache so I steer clear!

:yikes: SWEET? SWEET MYOWN?

Don't like beer, like cidar , love wine. It's so good. Especially that first sip. I like all different sorts....not always the most expensive either. Deep musty reds that smell of over ripe blackberries and are at exactly room temperature and have been breathing all day, and they slip down the throat so smoothly that you hardly realise they've gone down. Then lighter reds that you can actually drink slightly chilled. And sharp dry crisp fruity whites, well chilled. Oh yummy, I need a glass of wine :D

:yikes: OMG RC... you haven't tried a good Moscato or Riesling with spicy Vietnamese food? or spicy tuna sushi? Yums.

I consider those "sweet" wines albeit there's a difference between sweet and repugnantly sweet wines. I also love Port which is certainly on the sweet side. Try it with a piece of chocolate.

I don't like white much but love red with a meal and after and port too. I prefer darker beers to lager and like vodka (only with lemonade tho) and whisky (with redbull if it's bells and room temp water if it's a single malt).

I wouldn't drink wine in a pub cos I'd get pissed far too quickly.

Wine (red) is my go to drink when consuming any meat. Not just red meat, but any meat... I love the smooth cool feel of wine washing down after munching through tasty meat.

I really didn't fancy beer at all till very recently...maybe since 2 years ago and even then, I can't drink more than 3 pints. I just feel all bloated and useless....to get a buzz I'd rather just go for wine or hard liquor straightaway. Beer is good for a chill drink during a pow wow with friends, after work or something.

That's fair enough. I've gone beyond the point of no return now :P
