It's the summer break, time to reflect on F1 overall now we're all missing it.
Should also balance out the moaning threads, and the moaning threads about teams moaning.

I'll start,

The notion of a Grand Prix, you get to see all the drivers and all the teams competing on the same track, weaknesses are ruthlessly exposed, you retire every other finisher comes ahead of you.
The combination of engineer design with human motor skills, the car's are complex and intricate but the drivers are incredibly athletic, brave and skill-full, This also applies to the pit crew.
How it can be close, then not so close, sometimes it's tiny margins out on track, or in the timing for qualifying, but then either lap by lap or in a one-off blunder or exceptional ability your some way behind.
The race strategy element, working with your engineer, trying to work out a pit-window, predicting the tyres and what the opposition are likely to do.
The design, technical strategy, do you set up for DRS qualifying assuming you'll be in pole position for the race, or compromise? Do you prioritise a reliable car over an experimental one? What are your designs strengths and weaknesses? Should you play your drivers off against each other or focus on an optimum car and strategy for one?
The tyres, identical for every team, but designed so they have to be managed for an F1 race, gives the teams a challenge, a specification outside their control to design around.
The safety, it is a dangerous sport, but I hate how in other sports some of the best players spend loads of time not competing due to injury, fortunately this is relatively rare in F1 (I think even taking into account the relatively low amount of time spent competing), of course there are clear exceptions.
Similarly, the increased reliability of modern cars, I hated seeing a talented performance ruined by a mechanical failure, again I'm talking about a general trend, I know there are outliers.
The Worldwide appeal and participation.
The professionalism and team spirit, I think this is also contiguous with female participation, there's clear de-incentives for prejudice in F1.

Oh man...I had a hard time just reading all that, so hats off to you for typing it!

I just enjoy seeing the best drivers compete for tenths (this year thousandths) in qualifying, and then battle hard in the race. To be honest, what made F1 stick in my life was the old McLaren VS Ferrari of before, Mika VS Michael and all that. I was a lot more of a McLaren fan at that time with their black/white livery with the West logo on the rear wing and Mika and David on the sidepods. Ever since they switched to that sparkly chrome, I find myself supporting individual drivers more. Don't know why.

Anyway, I just like to see great drivers get great rewards. The only time a driver I was supporting actually WON a WDC was in 1998, 1999, and 2007! So I guess when you get very little of what you want in a sport you love, you look forward to a lot more. If that made any sense.

No you had a lot of points in that 1 post so I started skimming through after a while. But great effort, unlike me you really appreciate the details in the sport. I just want to see cars go wheel to wheel, in fact in terms of pure racing, I prefer V8 Supercars slightly over F1...but as an all rounder F1 is in a different league of course.

Thanks, although I wrote the summarised version there, which might have made it sound more advanced than a fully fledged detailed post through appearing "sophisticated" or like I just got to the point very easily.

Also, I've been thinking the stuff through for a while now, just thought I'd start a thread on it in the summer break.

First of all, I really like how vaptin has now surpassed the 5,000 posts mark. Round of applause ladies and gentlemen, I say, round of applause.

Now, down to the question in hand.

What do I like about F1? I like the cars, I like the different teams, their different colours and sponsors. I follow the WCC in more detail than I do the WDC. I prefer focusing on the WCC, and I support a team rather than a driver. I like good banter between fans of different teams, but only as long as it remains banter.

I like the different circuits, but I prefer ones that have matured into their surroundings, especially if those surroundings consist of parkland, countryside and trees close by the circuit, such as Monza, which is my favourite circuit on the calendar.

I like the atmosphere of well-attended Grands Prix. I've been to Silverstone in 2011, which was sold out, as per, and it was immense.

I like the community, and the characters within it, whether old and revered or young and in the spotlight. I love F1 much more than any other sport. And I probably always will.

Nice thread Vaptin, and well reasoned. For me, I like LEWIS!! :D

But that's because he epitomises all I love F1 for and not just because he's Lewis. I supported F1 long before Lewis came along.

Why F1?
Man and machine in harmony.
Superb display of talent and car control(best in the world-well ok except Pastor).
Cutting edge technology (despite FIA attempts to curtail it)
Excitement and buzz.
The huge camararderie between fans even of different drivers and teams (Silverstone weekend as Lew says is EPIC!)
Adrenaline hit before the start (I have to hide)
And icing on the cake, the euphoria when my man wins :D:D:D

That's a very nice thread vaptin, and you made out good points. I agree with everyone here.

What do I like about F1?
When the race starts!!
It changes my whole day sometimes, gives me a happiness for no reason.
I like how it changes my day, searching for sites to watch F1 when I am away from my house, making speculations about the race, caring about the hour and weather of somewhere far away.
It is full of surprises, anything can happen within a second, any wrong desicion can change the faith of the season.
The sound of the F1 cars of course. :cloud9:
Seeing how technology develops through years.
The atmosphere, and the feeling nobody except F1 fans get, which makes me a little bit proud :D I can't forget how I felt when I was with the knowledge of being in the place where my favorite sport happens, where my favorite drivers are and sharing the same passion with other fans

I like that it's the only motorsport that can charge $600 dollars for a grand stand ticket.

Depends on how much I'm offered and I need to see what I'm getting into first (pun intended). :groucho:
