Thought this would be an interesting topic of discussion given our three week layover till China. Interesting to see people's responses or where they wind up in the Stages of Moral Development.

There is a countdown timer that really messes with the urgency to pick a choice and not compromise your moral beliefs. I'd fall somewhere between conventional and post conventional, but there is no wrong or right answer, simply a possibility of development and morality in society. Watch the video first and do the interactive ending BEFORE you go running off to the Wikipedia link!

I'm post conventional, as I put myself in Heinz' place.

But as an outsider, I know I'd say 'Heinz should not steal because its illegal' though I dont know what this would be called. Conventional?

That would be pre-conventional.

Well, the conventional choice (steal and go to jail) seems a bit of a bum to me now. I choose that one though. If he "should" steal it, than the law should reflect that. I guess I'm arguing laws ought to be "perfect".

I guess whether its right to steal it or not, is based on the freedom of "individual rights"/ "private property" versus the collective good of society. Modern day society tends to consider things like healthcare and education as "natural" rights along side freedom etc.

The problem is the conventional natural rights tend to be negative based, your born with them, and the law just has to prevent them being taken away from you, whereas healthcare needs to be pro-actively provided, yet modern society still treats drugs as private enterprise (presumably as that's the most efficient way overall of producing drugs?). Obviously, the argument is, if you "nationalise" censored research, where do you draw the line between allowing individual rights, and the collective good? Fusion technology? New armour? Fuel efficient engines?
