I took part in the Stop Online Piracy Act Protest today my taking my websites offline for 12 hours! This doesn't affect anyone overseas right now but no doubt the rest of the world will follow if this proposal is passed in congress. Key points are that the entertainment industry with the backing of the US government would be able to take down whole sites that are allegedly linking to/hosting copyrighted material, without due process. An individual or group can be jailed for upto five years if links are found on their websites to illegal sharing sites or displaying copyrighted images 10 times in sixth month period. It would mean that websites like Twitter, Youtube, Facebook, mySpace and other social networking sites would have to actively censor posts, effectively negating the US constitutional right to free speech! That looks like a grim view of the future internet to me!
