Formula 1 set to add second US race on streets of New Jersey from 2013
By Jonathan Noble Saturday, October 22nd 2011, 06:41 GMT

Formula 1 is set to have two grands prix in the United States from 2013, with plans for a race around the streets of New Jersey expected to be confirmed as early as next week.

Although F1 is returning to the US for the first time next year with an event in Austin, Texas, Bernie Ecclestone has made no secret of the fact that he would like another event in the country - with his preferred location being New York.

Ecclestone told AUTOSPORT last year: "It's happening. We are talking to them and trying to do our best. Let's see what happens."

High level sources have revealed that the plans have now reached fruition, and an announcement is expected to be made by New Jersey governor Chris Christie and other local politicians next week.

It is understood that the New Jersey GP will take place in June 2013, so it can be a back-to-back race with Canada, which will then leave the Austin event to keep its place at the tail end of the schedule to tie up with the Brazilian Grand Prix.

Last year, the Mayors of Weehawken and West New York revealed that they were in the preliminary stages of talks with a group of investors, led by former YES TV Network executive Leo Hindery Jr, to hold a grand prix in the area from as early as 2013.

It is not confirmed where the track will be, but it is likely to run along the banks of the Hudson River - using the waterfront and the iconic Manhattan skyline as a backdrop.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Saturday that a press conference has been scheduled at Port Imperial in Weehawken for next Tuesday, where an announcement could be made.

Well, I've always said that they needed two over there, although I'm not sure the current plan would have been the way to go, as there are already some absolutely fantastic circuits available in the US. Still, this could work out well, although I'm not looking forward to adding another street circuit unless one gets dropped in its place. Valencia, I'm looking at you...

The more in the US the better. At least the grandstands have a better chance of filling up! (Unlike Asia). Imagine the atmosphere at a race on those streets of New Jersey! :)

It will hopefully take the place of a crap circuit... Bahrain, Barcelona, Valencia... all of those can be scrapped in my opinion.

I hope this Grand Prix goes ahead! :D

No country should have two grand prix's end of.Let alone a country that shows as little interest to the sport (present company excluded of course).

Does this mean Bernie's figured out a way around the teams' reluctance to race more than 20 times in a season?

One race is enough for any country. Montreal, Austin, Rio and possibly Mexico is plenty for that neck of the woods.

They're best to see how the first few races in Austin go before aiming for a market that might not be there. Cars going left and right on a track might blow the American mind and make them turn off.

Either that or some more European venues are in for the chop. :(:banghead: Spain Bernie! Sort out the ones in Spain! And leave the rest in Europe alone! :(

Ditch Silverstone. It is one of the most boring circuits on the calander. Bring back Imola and the A1 Ring, they are far superior.

So you'd have a calendar WITHOUT a British GP? :yikes:

I didn't say don't have a British GP. I said just ditch Silverstone. Anyway, if the British GP went I couldn't give a damn. As long as there are good circuits and good racing they could host all the races on Jupiter for all I care.

I think Silverstone produces excellent racing, take a look at this year's race for example. And the British fans always pack out the place and are knowledgeable and passionate. It's a great crowd to be part of. With a large amount of F1's fan-base coming from the UK, and with a lot of the teams based there, it'd be stupid not to have a British GP.

But Silverstone is being totally revamped and has signed a long-term deal. So it's here to stay!

Knowledgeable and passionate fans are at every race but that makes no difference to me when I watch it on the TV. OK the race this year was not bad but you have to consider the effect of DRS, KERS and the fragile tyres. If the Silverstone layout was changed it might be good but I honestly struggle to watch the British GP at times. Each to their own but to me it is a really poor circuit compared to the tracks that should but don't have a race.

Yes, I do see where you're coming from. There has been times when the British GP has been less of a thriller, but then we've even had the other classics produce the odd duff race.

It's no Spa, but compared to some circuits we have now, Silverstone is far superior.

It is better than Bahrain, Singapore, Monaco and Valencia but not by much.

Maybe if Scotland finally becomes indepentant we might get our own F1 race. They could have is out by Ballater with some nice scenery.

Silverstone was far better before the facelift before this one. With fast flowing corners.Loads of overtaking at bridge ,copse for the brave and hanger/stowe.Used to love stowe when it was 160 mph corner, think the way it is now stops overtaking more than it used to.
Don't get me wrong i want a british grand prix and at silverstone, but it's not as good as it was.
