Q: Both of you have turned ailing teams into championship winners. What is the key to success?
BE: Good people - good designers, team managers and drivers. But back then, at the times of Brabham, I had a significant advantage. We were the masters of cheating and never got caught. That’s not possible nowadays! (Christian laughs) Today it is all about who’s interpreting the rules best. That means staying within the rules but thinking outside of the box because the control mechanisms are too tight to take a risk.
CH: So that brings us straight back to having good people.
BE: That’s why it surprises me that Red Bull is so successful! Think about what they could achieve if they had a good team principal… (laughs) (Christian in hysterics)

I'm sure he wasn't the only one. Bet half the grid at the time didn't even know half the rules and regs of what was allowed, it was just hard core racing with whatever you had!

That was back in the good old days when they had underweight Tyrrells which were not discovered until the end of the year and drivers having lumps of lead surreptitiously dropped down their overalls in parc ferme before they were weighed at the end of a race.

They were all at it back then, only MrE is honest enough to admit it. Ah the good old days. :cloud9:

it was expected in those days, in other formulae too. sam posey says his camaros were acid dipped to thin the sheetmetal and save pounds. they never got caught. most teams used thinner roll bar tubing than allowed because there wasn't a good way to check it then. if you got caught the penalty was smal enough to make it worthwhile.

If a Bernie cheats in the forest and there's no one there to catch him, does he still break the rules?

It just goes to prove the old adage, it's only cheating if you get caught ...or if you grow senile and confess.
