[What's Burning?]

I wanted to pay a little tribute to Union City NJ so I figured it would be cool to start a thread where our members can maybe do a similar tribute to the place where they grew up. Union City is right over the Hudson river, across from Manhattan. It's basically one and a quarter square miles yet at one point it was the most densely populated city per square mile on the planet. Today it's only the most densely populated in the western hemisphere.

Because it sits atop the palisades cliffs, (a 200 foot granite wall along the edge of the river) it has phenomenal views of NYC and yes, it's one of the sites being considered for a US GP.

This is my small tribute to Union City, which ends with a big tribute to Union City by one of its former residents.

I said where I grew up, not where I was born... anyway, out of that high population density in Union City, at the time 70% of it was Cuban immigrants.

Lived in Roman Way, is now a rough rough area, wouldnt go there in daylight.

It was an area, Enfield as a whole that people used to aspire to live in, just on the borders of whats classed as London, and a lot of nice properties, of course we let all the wrong ones live there, as a result, like almost everywhere surrounding the city of london it is a shithole, and its expanding further and further outwards. Where i live gets a worse and worse rep every year cause the scumbags, white british, turkish, black, asian, whatever move in and breed like flies.

Sorry for the rant, if youd like to see where im from, look at last months riots in London, kicked off right in my hometown.

I was born and bred in Plymouth, United Kingdom, lived there all my life until three years ago when for some inexplicable reason I upped and moved to Kansas...

Plymouth is famous for two things, Sir Francis Drake who defeated the Spanish Armada and where the Pilgrim fathers sailed from to start a new life in America, which is why Plymouth, MA is called Plymouth, even my wife didn't put 2 and 2 together about Plymouth Rock in Plymouth MA... of course Plymouth, UK is famous for it's naval base, sadly a former shadow of itself!

Yes; most of the Navy ships were relocated to Portsmouth, hence my comment about Plymouth's naval port being a shadow of it's former self, only nuclear submarine are in Plymouth now!

So you're not tripping over Eastern Europeans where ever you go then? Must be the only place in the UK that isn't! Come to Aberdeen, the streets are full of beggers and buskers from that side of Europe. Seriously, I walked up Union Street (the main street in Aberdeen) yesterday and out of all the numerous beggers that I saw, only 2 of them where what you could class as indigenous going by the look and sound of them. But it's the ones with the fancy clothes and the touch screen phones that get me - so hard up they're having to make do with only the basic Applications on their phone. Maybe there's an iBeg App listing all the best spots.

But it's those whatevers that get me.....

well last time i checked eastern europeans came under the white category, i had to inclde british there just to emphasis the point it isnt foreigners completetely, im all for multiculturalism, we do it better then anywhere, but weve done it WAY too fast, and WAY to lax, ill never vote BNP or them Nazi skinhead w**kers ever, but someone needs to sort this s*** out. pronto.

Too many places that are just plain shitholes, every country has them, but in a city like london they shouldnt be surrounding the entire city.

Every town and city has it's less salubrious areas, however it is usually a minority that brings down an area causing the entire area to be tarred with the same brush.

A few years ago I was carrying out a survey of a flat in the Scatterburn area of Aberdeen (real wild territory). The bloke in the flat told me how his family were from that area. I think it was his Grand-dad that told him that this used to be a nice safe area (I could hardly believe my ears) but after a series of slum clearances in Glasgow, families were rehoused up here. What happened was you'd have part of one family in one building then another part of the same family in another building causing 2 buildings to go to the dogs and so on until the whole area became one of Aberdeens several armpits. Great planning(!) I dare say this was repeated in several towns and cities across this diverse land.
