Irvine slams current state of 'messy' F1
Monday 12th September 2011, 20:59

Eddie Irvine, former driver for Jordan, Ferrari and Jaguar, has slammed the current state of Formula 1, describing it as a "mess" which "doesn't make sense."

The four-time race winner was in the Monza paddock for the Italian GP and spoke to the BBC after the race, in which he took the time to share his view on KERS and DRS.

"Now you've got the dropping wing, you've got the button to push to make you go faster, so if you can't overtake with all that s**t going on it's like ... I think it's a mess," said the outspoken Northern Irishman.

"You don't know when they're on the limiter, you don't know if they've got the EPS [He means DRS], what is it, the wing drops down, the button push. It's a mess, the formula now is a mess.

"There's just too much f*****g s**t. You see an overtaking manoeuvre and you don't know if they did it with button, they did it with the wing, they did it with all of them, or they actually did something good. And now, everybody overtakes 50 times a race. It's like shooting for minnows, it doesn't make sense."

If F1 is such a mess what are you trying to do by seeking attention in the Paddock?!? If it is such a mess why are you there in the 1st place. If it is a sport that you loved and still followed you would at least be able to name correctly a significant rule change

What puzzled me most about it is that he didn't mention the year's biggest factor to overtaking, tires.

90 percent of this forum dont agree with current rules and regulations in F1 but ive never heard anybody tell them to do one and stop watching if they dont like it.

Eddie Irvine has strong opinions on the sport he passionately follows, so what?

if he was that passionate he would know what the "dropping wing" and "the button to push to make you go faster" was actually called!

I think he was playing coy to make a point. I agree with fraf.

99.9% of the members of this forum don't get to have a BBC microphone put in front of their mouth to give their opinion on the sport. So if you've got an audience, making yourself seem like an bottom, by not being fully aware of what it is you're criticizing is rather on the embarrassing side.

Im sure he knew their names he just made them sound stupid for the sake of argument.

This you're sure of? How? So the options we're left with are, he knows but he's acting like an idiot about it, or he doesn't know and he is an idiot.

1. So what, we're all meant to cower and betray our true thoughts if its publicly broadcast? Nice moral code to preach there WB, a career in politics is on the cards for you ! :hehe:

2. How about the option that hes purposely dumbing down the names in order to suit his argument? Thats not purposely acting stupid, its emphasising a point by means of stripping down formalities and saying basically what it is " flappy wings and power buttons" because they are essentially flappy wings and power buttons.

3. He has a very valid point in considering it a mess, at some tracks theres two zones, at others theres one, how amazingly inconsistent and embaressing is that for a sport, like having two goals at some football matches and one goal at others, its actually unfair plain and simple.

4. You attack me for being sure he knows what hes talking about, but are sure yourself that he doesnt know what hes talking about. Are you seriously suggesting Eddie Irvine would be totally lost if someones said KERS and DRS to him, thats the real laughable thing here.

I'm with Irvine of DRS and KERS. I don't like either as they paper over the problems that prevent overtaking and do not solve the real issues.

The sooner the rules are changed to reduce the reliance on areo grip and rely on mechanical grip the better. However, I doubt this will ever happen as F1 has evolved past this and returning to mechanical grip could be seen as a bstep backwards.

If F1 is such a mess what are you trying to do by seeking attention in the Paddock?!? If it is such a mess why are you there in the 1st place.

I asked pretty much the same thing in the race thread. Free drink and women with loose morals who are impressed by his chat up line of "Oi drove for Ferrari, can I buy you a yacht" is my guess.

As for getting the names wrong, he was either trying to belittle KERS and DRS by making them sound unmemorable or he was suffering from mild alcohol poisoning which makes him sound even more of a loud mouth than normal or he was trying to be funny.

Fraffy - do not take on a moderator. You'll come off worst. They have powers beyond the ability of us plebs.:hehe:

I'm not sure how I should take this, coming from the undisputed world champion of saying one thing and doing another. Morals are supposed to be applied consistently, not only when they suit your purpose or mood.

Take it whatever way i dont care but the whole point is stop being hypocrites, moan moan moan on the forum, what!? whats this!??!? Eddie Irvine has echoed the sentiment of thousands of F1 fans but......he did it......on air!?!??!??!

BLASPHEMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He doesnt like KERS or DRS, so what?

are you not familiar with humor?

You're laughing with him or at him?

With him. Not saying he should start a stand-up routine or anything.

Anyway, arguing that he should not attend a Grand Prix because he disagrees with the implementation of DRS and KERS is ridiculous. As if it's not possible to still enjoy the sport despite its flaws.
