Our favorite little half-baked croissant is proposing a rule for 2012 that only the team's test drivers be allowed to drive in FP1 and FP2. Teams are forbidden bringing a spare car to races but Jean Todt is in favour of forcing teams to let part-time help put their hired racing driver's car at risk. F1 is in such dire straights that we're reduced to no refueling, mandatory spec engines with a tightly regulated minimum lifespan, limited staff, limited working hours, and dramatically limited testing, yet there's bounty enough to let the not-quite-good-enough-yet staff putter around in our bespoke racing car, about 24 hours before qualies.

This is like having the caddy make the tee shot before letting the golf pro do his job.

Our favorite little half-baked croissant...

Croissant? Really?

So I take it you preferred MrM's meddling and gifts to teams?

Seems a fair enough idea especially if there is not much chance for reserve drivers to get some in-car time.

Don't forget the return of in-season testing... they could get some running in there too.

The in-season testing is still pretty limited I think and I would imagine that it'll mainly be the race drivers that will take part in these sessions so they can get to grips with updates and what with the RRA.

Aye, I can see that happening.

I'm glad it's back on the cards though.

Oh I thought he had something to do with big time ferrari stuff. hmm ah well.

He managed the F1 team from 1992 until 2007. He was the CEO of Ferrari 2008 - 2009 but Luca di Montezemolo is the Chairman of Ferrari.

It's a good idea this. Even with limited in-season testing, reserve drivers have no opportunity to get any decent amount of time in the car. if nothing else, this is good for the safety aspect of having reserve drivers taking the place of a regular driver.

OP only got the half of it.

Saturday/Sunday schedule next year will remain the same (Sat: 1hr Pactise, 20min/15min/10min Quali. Sun: Race). But on Friday, Todt wants 3x1hr Practise sessions instead of 2x1.5hr Practise sessions. The first of three 1hr sessions would be only open for test drivers. For the next 2 sessions, main drivers can practise.

I think it's a good idea. The guys trying to break into F1 can get miles under their belt which has been a problem for the last few years.

What's wrong with this idea again?

Probably Todt's first constructive idea as President.

This is really stupid that gives the race drivers 1 hour to set their car up before qualifying in P3 and using data from Fridays running from a rookie.
As a GP race going attendee I also find this stupid as I want to see the GP guys on Friday if it's only a bunch of rookies you can kiss Friday attendences at GPs good bye.

With the return of in season testing this should be used as a testing ground for young drivers like we saw with AD.

Edit

OP only got the half of it.
