Is a 5 place grid penalty enough punishment for Maldonado?

I really do feel after watching that incident that a 5 place grid penalty is not enough. Two years ago the FIA handed a life time ban to Flavio Briotore for ordering Nelson Piquet Junior to crash deliberately and Nelson himself lost his seat in F1.
It should not matter whether your boss ordered it or if you decided to do it off your own back - if the crash is deliberate which I personally think this blatantly was then he Maldonado should have his super licence revoked immediately. Pulling a stunt like that is not only dangerous for the other driver but dangerous for the spectators too.

This is a difficult one.

* If Maldonado did this on purpose (which I believe he did) then it isn't enough. I wouldn't go as far as saying his licence is to be revoked, but purposeful collisions should be handled more harshly than with 5-place penalties.

* However, if it was an accident (and it's a pretty dumb-arsed accident to have), then it is sufficient.

We fans have only had access to rather distant external footage. The details of the accident have not been made clear. So we are in no place to decide what punishments ought to be handed out. With this in mind, I'm just glad Maldonado gets a penalty, and hopefully the ghosts of this afternoon's events in qualifying will come back to bite him if he dares do anything similar in the future.

This is the first I've heard of it as I haven't yet watched my recorded Q but I question why would PM do this deliberately? Does not compute. Nothing for him to gain by that. Are they title rivals? LOL That to me reduces the possibility that it was deliberate. And that was a rather odd first post. A litle reactionary, and no greeting? Usually that's a troll but I'll hold my judgement.

Of course it is enough! There have been worse incidents that have received less of a punishment and worse incidents which have received too severe a punishment. On this occasion the stewards got it 100% correct.

Exactly, except I would take the view of it's done, it's in the past move on, no point dwelling on it.

Too be honest, the pair of them were playing up with Hamilton shoving Maldonado out of the way on the final corner. Maldonado could maybe have kicked up a stink about that (whether he got anywhere with this stink is irrelevant) but he shot himself in the foot by literally hitting back. He's been a tit and likely he'll know it.

Pissed off still about Monaco? Not happy that Lewis got by on that last corner (when lewis was fighting to get in Q3)?He's an idiot!! More sinister reasons ? Who knows? Hope Im wrong, but it doesnt look good. I thought he and lewis wee friends?? thought Id Heard lewis say that... Some friend.

With my mod hat on I wanted to merge this with the Spa thread...but on reflection think maybe we should discuss the Lewis/maldonado incident here and leave the Spa thread free for spa(other than this incident)

Hamilton thinks he is friends with everybody. Once he apologised via Twitter to Massa and Mandy after Monaco, he claimed they were all best pals.

Anyway, I don't buy this conspiracy theory. I can't imagine that whilst trying to spank an F1 car round a damop track that you would be sittng there think about something that happend about 3 months ago.

Most likely that Mandy was steamed about their tango in the final corner.

Oh and in answer to the question. No. A 5 place grid penalty is not enough. A little fairness PLEASE stewards!

Which hat are you wearing when you say this? F1 fan hat or Hamiltonian hat?

In the grand scheme of things, Mandy screwed himself, Hamilton carried on unhindered. No biggie going forward.

The hat that says leave racing incidents alone but deal with deliberate dangerous actions

No he doesnt.

Sorry, should've posted in this thread instead.

IMHO, they both should get a penalty. Funny that the voting choices assume HAM is clear from any faults.

HAM turned in to MAL and MAL turned to HAM, both should be equally at fault, both should get penalty.

 Both drivers.

It's all this hat changing is getting confusing.

No he doesnt.

Oh you ruined the joke. Besides, they may be friends off track but they are competitors on-track.

And how have you arrived at this curiously DETAILED explanation of a bonkers incident where both drivers WILLINGLY turn into each other when we've hardly had any video evidence to show us anything?

Watch the posted video clip carefully and turn off the commentary sound.

Be neutral, and you will see what I mean.

But I can understand being a hardcore fan for a team can sometimes influence one's opinion.

Neutral. :)

Edit: posted video here for everyone's reference.
