Hello everyone I'm new here. I just have an opinion and was wondering what everyone else thinks about it.

The qualifying format is very exciting for the fans but I think it takes away from the race. The top teams are allowed additional time to improve their times and put distance between them and the lower qualifying teams. While this isn't a big deal for the qualifying it can translate into larger gaps during the race. For instance, from Q1 to Q3 the top teams (top three I believe) reduced their lap times by about 2 seconds (give or take). Granted this is in qualifying trim I promise you some of the teams are using this as a opportunity to work on their race trim. If not they are still getting valuable data that can be applied to the race setups. I think this format contributes to reduce overtaking in the race.

I know this is going to get a lot responses haha good and bad but hey here goes. I think the format should be reversed. I think the additional qualifying sessions should be reversed. I think the slower teams should be the ones that go into the additional sessions. This will give them the additional test data to be more competitive or at least reduce the gaps from the top teams. To prevent sandbagging I would offer championship points to the top qualifiers. The points should be large enough to entice the teams to chase the top spot but not significant enough that it would over shadow the race points. Maybe half increments or something.

Another option is possibly teams in the lower portion of the championship points standings be allowed maybe an additional testing session on the track.

what do you guys think

The top teams get 1-2 seconds faster because in Q1 they use the Harder compound of tyres whilst in Q2 and Q3 they have to use the Soft compound of tyres.
Also more rubber gets put down on the track in Q2 and Q3 so the track would be faster.

Yes, as seen in the Germany Qualifiying in Q1, massa is 1 seconds slower than the top cars, then he uses up a set of soft tyres and then gets 1 seconds in front of the top drivers such as Alonso, vettel and webber.

And all the top Drivers use hard tyres in Q1.

If your beef is against the lower grid teams not being able to test and gather data, the push for additional testing. Why ruin the best qualifying format in all of auto racing?

To be honest, I prefered the old system of 12 laps each over a 1 hour session and the drivers can do as they please.

I preferred the 1 lap for each driver format, that was 'in the spotlight' stuff!!

What the top teams gain in a bit extra track knowledge, they probably lose as they burn up more sets of tyres and have fewer fresh tyres for the race.

The tyre situation has changed once again, it looks like. They're back to being more durable, fresh rubber isn't such a big factor now.

Seconded! It's equal for everyone that way; yes it did lead to 30 minutes of no-one on the track sometimes but the climax was often spectacular!

As for the OP's point; rather than reversing the qualifying system; let's just back in season testing; say four official test sessions per year!

I think we have the best qualifying format we've ever had at the moment. The pre-2003 format was great too. But I wasn't a fan of the 1-lap format.

The format is fine but I wish they had quali only cars with qualy only engines.

The Nurburgring GP was indeed a tad bit more exciting than Qualifying though. :D

That would be awsome, in modern f1 there would be some serious upsets in the pole position
