Well it's official as from next season there will be F1's first night race.

Singapore will host a round of the 2008 FIA Formula One World Championship, it was confirmed on Friday. The race, to be held on a new street circuit, will be the first night-time event in Formula One history.

The announcement follows the agreement of a five-year deal between FOM CEO Bernie Ecclestone, Singapore entrepreneur Mr Ong Beng Seng, and the Singapore Tourism Board.

“I am very pleased to welcome Singapore to the Formula One family and we look forward to this exotic addition to the championship,” said Ecclestone. “This will be the first fully lit street race in Formula One.

So what are your thoughts on this historic event, are you all as excited as I am at the prospect?

I remember all the build-up to the first ever British Touring Car Race to be held at night, it will indeed be a historic moment in Motor Racing history. :)

Not sure it's going to be that spectacular from the outside. I'm pretty sure the entire track will be lit so brightly, you may as well think it's in plain daylight. Just watch a soccer game in the evening with all the floodlights on. F1 can't really afford anything other than near perfect vision for the drivers at night - just imagine the scandal and lawuits and damage to F1's reputation if some serious accident could be traced back to poor lighting conditions?

I just hope we see the cars bottoming out and huge trails of sparks...

Oh when Jenson's engine exploded before the line, was it last year? A couple of those at night would be mega...

In fact, if I were Bernie, I would ensure that happens...

In fact, if I was a small team looking for some camera time, what better way of doing it... LoL, if Red Bull did it that would mean flames would be coming out of the Bull's arse... Chilli Fuel...

The problem as I see it is that Formula 1 is no longer about pure unadulterated racing. It has to be compromised for want of a better word - screwed anybody? - with the Bernie show.

Bring back the proper circuits, the old Monza, Silverstone, Spa, Clermond Ferrand, even Zandvoort.

These clinical "playstation" circuits Tilke is making a packet out of, don't even start compared to the real circuits.

I'm glad I'm old enough to have watched heroes like Moss, Clark, Stewart, Peterson, Villeneuve, Senna and others race real cars on real circuits.

I know what you are saying, true F1 is dead, it's all about the TV ratings now adays...

But this is still exciting regardless of how you spin it...
