This is a different topic, but one that has much scope for debate.

I come from a county in Northern England called Lancashire. Northern England is an upland region, and is full of places like wild open moors and hillsides.

There is a large area of moorland near my home town, which has been selected to build a wind farm on. Twelve turbines. This plan is controversial, and is typical of the ongoing debates all over the place whether or not to erect wind farms on inland areas.

People against the wind farm talk of ruining the natural beauty of the moor. People for the wind farm say that it won't look so bad at all, and the need for renewable power is now greater than ever.

I'm not sure where to stand on this. Would the moors still look nice, even with wind turbines on them? Would they put you off going on the moors? Would you support this plan?

I'm interested to know what people think, if they are at all interested......it's a good mix of nature and politics all rolled into one

Just have it both ways, that moors are large enough that twelve turbines will not fill them, create a green belt on it and shove as many as you can in whats allowed.

Plus, would you rather the moors became a sandy wasteland in 100 years or it was still beautifully boggy and preserved due to alternate energy sources?

Pennsylvania is one of the leading wind energy states in the US, I know of at least 3 places that I drive by that looks like those pictures, and I'm glad to say that not one have I thought.... oh, what a shame it's spoiled the natural beauty of the area. On the contrary, it feels good that we've may have some hope for the future of humanity.

...but if in doubt, read the excerpt below straight from Wikipedia.

If all the wind energy potential was developed in Pennsylvania with utility-scale wind turbines, the power produced each year would equal 38,000,000 megawatt-hours - or 30% of the entire state's electricity consumption.

 Absolutely.

Thank you guys for the reassurance.

There's a certain beauty and calmness that actually comes with watching wind turbines, which, coupled with the wilderness of the moors, should be a whole new wonder in itself.

I have wind turbines upon the hills behind my house and they look fine to me. I'm surprised you haven't already got an idea of how you'll think it might be, though - every time I go to Blackburn/Burnley, I have to pass tons of the things. They don't bother me in the slightest.

Oh yes, well of course I know what they look like in certain areas, but they're non-existant in Oswaldtwistle. I'm very familiar with Oswaldtwistle Moor, and enjoy going up there often. So the prospect of wind turbines being put up there was a big impact at first. However, I think I've warmed to the idea now. I never had any problem with them before, it's just that Oswaldtwistle Moor is an area I'm rather fond of.

Bill Sykes never asked politely :hehe:

Neither did the Krays. And I'm pretty sure old Jack the Ripper wasn't polite about anything.........
