Sir Frank Williams, the former Formula One team manager, is to have a road named after him in south Oxfordshire.

The road will run through Great Western Park, a new development straddling the Didcot and Harwell boundary.

A local resident originally suggested the name for the road, which South Oxfordshire and Vale of White Horse District Councils approved.

"Sir Frank Williams Avenue" is the only road named after a living person in the Vale of White Horse council area.

The new development will contain 3,300 houses by 2026.

In 1977, Sir Frank bought an empty industrial unit in Didcot with engineer Patrick Head and used it to set up Williams Grand Prix Engineering.

The Williams F1 team has competed in more than 500 Grand Prix, achieving 113 wins, nine World Constructors' Championships and seven World Drivers' Championships.

He stepped down as chairman in July 2010.

Sir Frank said: "To have a road named after you is a great honour and not something I ever anticipated when Patrick and I started Williams Grand Prix Engineering over three decades ago.

"We are a team, though, so this is an honour for everyone who has been involved in Williams since our inception."

Ann Ducker, leader of South Oxfordshire District Council, said: "Sir Frank Williams has made an incredible contribution to the area and has helped to cement southern Oxfordshire as a real centre of excellence for motor sport and engineering in general so it is only right that we can honour him in this way."

District councils have responsibility for naming streets as well as installing street name plates.

I wanted Williams so badly to be relevant this year. Good for Sir Frank, but don't distract him from his primary focus!

Massive respect to Sir Frank Williams and Patrick Head and to the whole of the Williams F1 Team. They're a great squad with so much spirit and passion, who are on the grid for one purpose ONLY - to race, because they love it. The same can't be said of all teams (i.e. the reason the team was formed).

I dearly hope Williams return to the front. It's where they truly belong. :crying:

As a youngster before I became a fan of F1 everytime I saw a race on TV and they'd show Sir Frank I thought of him as the Professor from X-Man. The man is a Legend.

Seriously? All he gets is a stretch of tarmac named after him? They should at least have made him a baron or other minor noble.

Seriously, though, with what he's meant to the sport (not to mention the country), that's not enough. We should stage a write-in campaign. I've always thought First Lord of the Admiralty has a rather nice ring to it.

wasn't he knighted in 1999-2000?

Yes. He is called Sir Frank Williams.

In 1987 the Queen awarded Williams the title of CBE. He was knighted in 1999. He is also one of the few non-Frenchmen to have been made a Chevalier of France's Legion d'honneur, this honour accorded for his work with Renault engines. In 2008 Williams was awarded the Wheatcroft trophy.

On 19 December 2010, he was awarded the Helen Rollason Award for "outstanding achievement in the face of adversity" at the BBC Sports Personality of The Year Awards.
