I just want to ask people who have watched F1 for ages - is lewis comparable to senna? Can we put his name next to Senna and say that he's the closest thing there's been after Senna?

If your looking for unbiased talk youd probably have to ask this question on a cement-mixers guild forum.

Those who dont support him will disagree,

Those who so support him will agree

Lewis has his own identity if you ask me, the Helmet thing is awful cute, but yes, i do believe he is the closest thing to Senna since.....Schumacher...

Schumi and Hamilton both share characteristics with Senna. In Schumi's case, I think he perfected what Senna started: the completely committed, dedicated driver as an athlete, with tough physical and mental training. And of course, the results showed it! Schumacher was insanely successful. Lewis? I think he has the passion and aggressiveness of Senna, the OMG moves on the track, and also some of that focus and dedication.

But...every driver is pretty much unique. And no one will replace Senna. Not that he was perfect; he had his serious faults too, remember.

The comparison is silly really. We've never seen any of the modern drivers attempt to drive any of the older cars, nor have we seen the older drivers attempt to deal with the tech of the new cars. There is no way to compare the skillsets....so all we can compare are the driver's accomplishments which is also pretty pointless.

Well Lewis is the first driver I have really supported since Ayrton. They are simular in the do or die attitude, the breathtaking overtakes.
Yes he probably is the nearest thing we've had to Ayrton since Ayrton, but there will never be another Ayrton :D .Not meaning he is was by far the best ever ,simply that his single minded dedication, the ability to be basicly in a trance in a qualifying lap(other drivers used to sit in the pits and watch his lap,it was normally that good),very strong religous beliefs.Add to that the south american flare, even at school he got into a lot of fights ,something I can't imagine Lewis ever done lol.
Also Ayrton kind of revolusionised how a formula one driver is.In that he was the first to be super fit, something as stated above Schu followed suite,as did the rest of the field.. :hehe:

So for me to some it up nearly ,but not quite :D
But in time Lewis may even surpass Ayrton but he will be Lewis Hamilton, not Ayrton Senna

I was reading Hamiltons biography, apparently he was excluded(wrongly) for kicking a pupil in, in the toilets of his school. It actually sounds like he did it with his explanations etc....... i was like whoa you utter nutcase!

I think Hamilton is close but not quite as good, as Bendover said it is silly comparing skillsets. I suppose it just boils down to talent, I can honestly say they are both more talented than me behind the wheel lol. I would like to see where Hamilton would be now, if it was not for the McLaren backing to see say for sure one way or the other. Ayrton (by luck or judgement) did not arrive in the best car on the grid, as Martin Brundle had beat him to the good seat as he had beat Ayrton the year before in F3 (I think it was). So when he got a top car he had already been broken in. Lewis got broken in next to a 2 time world champion in a top car.

Oh, that's classic. Another mod in here kicking off the personal attacks. I say Hamster and get a warning for insulting a driver and yet you hamilton love bunny mods just keep looking for a fight. What's wrong skippy, not enough drama in your life? The moderation on this board is a joke.

I gotta agree; that was uncalled for.

I also agree with Kerc on this one

Not much of a billindenver 'fan' myself...but I'm with him on this one.

Unfortunately I never had the liberty to watch Senna drive but the description of his attitude on track definitely matches Lewis, and Kobayashi from what I see. Though Lewis has already proven so much and he has that ability to string fastest laps over and over without fault, he might be the closest thing to Ayrton? I believe it would be a lot more fair for those who've watched both drivers race to judge. :)

Going back on topic, I think that although it makes no sense to compare, it is interesting to see how drivers "inherited" from Senna, and also from Schumacher, this thing about becoming a real athlete, and not just a guy who happened to drive fast cars on the weekends.

In that sense, all drivers have that in common with Senna. :)
