I've always been a voracious reader, and I'm always looking for new authors. I can sniff out a bad writer in ten seconds (Robert Pattinson...ugh!), but Stephen King is up there on my best list (Shawshank Redemption).

Here's my list. I'm sure I've left a lot out, but this is my solid few:

Donna Tartt
Robert B Parker
Margaret Atwood
Alice McDermott
Robert Crais
Lee Child
Nelson de Mille
Nevada Barr

If I see a book by any of the above, I will buy it.

Who are your must buy authors?

Lee Child

 Love his books.

I'm a big fan of LE Modesitt Jr's Recluce saga.

Not normally into "fashionable" books but really enjoyed Steig Larsson's Millennium trilogy.

I tend to buy a lot of second hand books as I read so much I'd bankrupt myself if I bought them all new. However I always try and buy my favourite authors' books new. The authors who I seem to have bought the most books of are:
Tad Williams
China Mieville
Brent Weeks
Rick Cook (you can download his first two books free from the Baen free library: http://www.baen.com/library/rcook.htm:) )

I read books to get away from reality and his books are just odd enough to make me laugh. Plus some of his caracters I am sure I work with them IRL

Bill Carter's The Late Shift and especially The War for Late Night: When Leno Went Early and Television Went Crazy are fantastic. They're also required reading for fans of comedy talk shows like Conan.

I also thoroughly enjoyed James B. Stewart's DisneyWar, which is about the rise and fall of Michael D. Eisner as the CEO of The Walt Disney COmpany, and also touches on the prior history of the company under Walt Disney, then Roy O. Disney and then E. Cardon Walker.
