P.S. the cap is so trucking low that what if towards the end of a season a team has to spend more than the cap just to fix a damaged car? the last issue of F1 mag had an article about the cost of the big crash in Spain.

Max Mosely, the umpalumpa addict, the man who killed F1.

Personally I think the statement by the FIA makes a number of good points.

Yes, some of what they say is completely absurd, but so does some of the things FOTA are saying.

Hitler made a number of good points also.

I realise i'm one of the few against a split in Formula One. If it does happen it will be a dark day for Motorsport in general.

Im for the continuation of F1, whether that means the name will change because "F1" will be a breakaway while the sport named F1 will be nothing more than a b grade spec "constructor"series.

Even so, both series will be weaker than if they were to continue.
Speaking of continuation, I doubt many Manufacturers will.

F1 will be weaker. the breakaway will be a breath of fresh air! and in a few years if not straight away people will see it as F1 anyway!

Say that a breakaway series does happen; what would happen to the series if for example three manufacturers pull out of the new series at the end of 2010 because of a continuing recession? Can a rival championship survive with Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull, Toro Rosso, and Brawn? Assuming that rumours about Renault, Toyota and BMW are looking at an exit strategy are true!

the same thing that would happen to the FIA series.

I'm sure that more teams would be willing to enter the £40m F1 world championship and be competitive than would be willing to enter an unlimited GP world championship to be at the back of the grid with a relatively minuscule operating budget, it would be the Forti "mobile chicane" all over again! F1 may not have such high profile teams but I doubt there would be a problem filling grid slots given the amount of entries lodged for the 2010 championship by new teams! I still doubt the split will actually happen though!

I don't believe I am missing the point; my question is how many teams are needed to have a viable championship and that number could be four if Brawn's latest statement about being "completely confident" of participating in the 2010 championship; are they ready to break ranks as well? Obviously that is assuming that Toyota, Renault and BMW do exit F1 as well. As I said a breakaway series is unlikely; FOTA are using the GPWC are a bargaining chip much like they did back in 2005 when teams signed separate contracts that have caused all the furore with Ferrari's veto recently! Besides we know that if Max Mosley does allow eight teams to walk, his reign as king will be over!

(well, we can hope); I just want the situation resolved one way or another now, this spat isn't doing anyone any favours!

Good old Felippe, he's just chucked a gallon of unleaded onto the fire pmsl http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/ ... 572580.ece
http://www.thesun.co.uk/sol/homepage/sp ... Massa.html

Do you realise that the Times link is dated 2005?

I wonder what will happen as Ferrari, Red Bull and Toro Rosso have been entered unconditionally as they are contracted to FOM until 2012. It may transpire that if the aforementioned teams don't compete in F1 they will face legal action or have to sit out the next three years completely as they can not race in an alternative series to F1. So we are looking at more court-room F1; maybe Lewis and Jenson can sit in the courtroom playing Scalextric, at least they'll have equal machinery! ;)

The rumours of some of the teams you mentioned leaving F1 are more to do with the current FIA governance than of the cost. FOTA has cost reduction measures in place which they would adopt in their own championship. With the right governance then they will stay.

But think about it, Mosely is using the current global financial climate(but that wont last forever) as justification for his personal crusade. Teams willing to spend big money to compete in the pinnacle of motorsports will come again just as they did in the early 2000s. Until then i can see FOTAs series running 3 car teams! And it will be a step above the FIA F1, with the best teams best drivers and best cars! which means the fans!
