...It has also emerged that Renault may not be prevented from fixing its obvious technical problems once the development ‘freeze’ deadline passes, in just over a week.

“There is a ‘fair and equitable’ rule which gives us the opportunity to change any of the components if we have reliability problems,” said Renault Sport’s Remi Taffin.

“I have to say, however, that we do not have big problems with the parts, as we have done successful tests on the dynamometer. We just have to make them all work together.”

Does that mean they're going to have a free pass to develop their engine while everyone else takes a freeze? Like last year? If so it's a good job Merc have extra power to call on over the year, and I hope Ferrari do too.

Apparently, their problem is all Briatore's fault!!

Edd Straw wrote:">Energy recovery contributing to Renault F1 test issues, says Horner

...Horner believes that former Renault team principal Flavio Briatore's decision that his team (now Lotus) rather than the French manufacturer itself should develop KERS originally is at the heart of the struggles.

While this was a logical move at the time, it was decided when such systems were less complex and could be bolted onto existing engines, meaning that Renault has less experience than it otherwise would in this area.

"If you look at the situation at Renault, Flavio made the decision years ago that energy recover and KERS would be dealt with by the race team, not the engine manufacturer.

"Renault then sold the race team and we picked up KERS and developed our own system that we ran within the gearbox.

"Now, on the new powertrain, energy recovery has gone back to being the responsibility of the engine supplier, which is where it should sit but they have had a steeper learning curve than perhaps Mercedes or Ferrari who have a few years of experience."...

So why didn't Horner lend his guys to Renault for a while to make sure they had ERS knowledge

What a sob story. Everyone has known all about these new regs and its implications for 4 years. Horner wasnt complaining when he had control of the Kers and ran with a smaller lightweight one. He wasnt complaining when Renault developed the engine mapping he wanted whilst the other engines were frozen. He wasnt complaining when he dumped Ferrari for Renault despit the fact Renault was undepowered and more fuel economical

There is only 1 solution Christian, make your own engines and ERS or buy your own engine maker and become a manufacturer. Until then sell some soft drinks and use the money like any other customer. You dont hear Williams moaning and they make their own Kers, Im sure they would like to use it instead of depend on their engine maker...er hold on :hehe:

That could mean RBR are yet to complete laps in a 2014 legal car :yikes:

As far as I know only 2 teams (Mercedes and Ferrari) are running the camera mountings on the front of the chassis near the nose, meaning that by default everyone else isn't running a legal car, but I can't imagine they make a huge performance difference anyway.

The camera mountings are legit, they are just aerodynamically handy, like McLarens suspension.

No what I meant about RB10 is that so far to actually get round the track without combusting, cooling holes have had to be sawn and drilled for extra cooling - these are clearly illegal, so their car that completed laps couldnt start the race in AUS. Newey has yet to bring a car that has adequate cooling and is within the regs. I suspect the size of the Caterham sidepods are the clue to what car they will turn up with

Yeah no I get that I was being pedantic (Ted what's his name from sky was saying because they lack the FIA mandated camera mountings on the front of the chassis their car is illegal anyway), the camera mountings missing are less of a legality problem than gouging holes in your engine cover.

I wonder how much truth there is in this? Secret test for trouble red Bull? Supposedly testing at a track south of Barcelona called Idiada. I like the statement by the red bull spokeswoman at the end of the article
"We're not at Idiada"

It begs the follow up question 'Well where are you then?' :P
