If there is a split, it's quite possible Williams will not have any competition in F1. There will a year with a complete Williams walkover, which could be rather boring. FOTA would have a number of top teams, and most likely a more exciting championship. This could be one of the crucial factors determining which championship would win out.

and in the end i think Williams would want to join said breakaway to compete with the big boys.

Could they afford to buy their way out of the F1 contract. It would be surprising if there were break clauses that would allow them to just leave a running F1 series after signing up.

The breakaway series would probably help with that.

Teams still dominate in spec series!

By default that is because that person is the best driver; whereas F1 matters as much on machinery (if not more) as driving skill, how often are world championships won by drivers that aren't the best driver; a good car can flatter an average driver. I don't want a spec series but more opportunity to be in the winners circle would be nice!

Actually, a lot of it is still down to how good the team are. Pit stops, car setup, strategies (where applicable) etc.

na teams are still broken up for example in A1GP where France would swap drivers every two races yet still dominate. was that down to driver skill or just good engineering? same car for all!

and to say a world title is won by an average driver is somewhat of an oxymoron. no matter the car you still need to get the job done. and how do you distinguish a title from the car to driver skill?

Exactly. Just look at the IRL, and Champ Car(RIP).

If spec car series can still be dominated despite having similar chassis' and engines whats the big fuss about the budget cap? Surely that would promote more ingenuity and with the cap there is much more technical freedom. When it comes to average drivers; many of the drivers could win races in this years Brawn car but there is a number of F1 champions that are nowhere this season without the best technology underneath them. Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen all look very ordinary this year. I do wonder given the same equipment, pit crew and other things listed above who would win out of Button, Hamilton, Alonso and Raikkonen? I think a true representation of a good driver is the ability to make a car that isn't the best challenge for the top spots, I don't believe there is a driver like that on the current grid!

keeping F1..... F1!

But F1 isn't the same as what it was 15 years ago; the whole landscape of F1 changed when manufacturers started running their own teams.

Some change? F1 is unrecognisable from what it was 15 year ago, it is a watered down version of its former self. I believe that a budget cap will revitalise the sport bringing in more teams and tightening up racing allowing for more technical freedom. I wonder how long Manor and Campos will stick around if the cap doesn't happen!

The only thing that will save Formula One is allowing teams to be innovative.

Which is why I like the budget cap idea because it allows for that innovation. With unlimited budgets the FIA clamp down on any innovation or other teams complain about new innovations like the Brawn double diffuser this year and it normally get banned. Personally I would like a roll back to the early 90s rules and regulations as that's when racing was at it's best and before all the FIA's pointless regulations to slow cars down which has diluted the spirit of F1; I firmly believe that the budget cap with it's technical freedom is the way to get back to those days!
