Just as it says...

Great expectations is very slow - particularly at the start where he spends ages on details and events that are really inconsequential. It gets better later on when it is a fully fleshed out life story. Have you seen the black and white film of it, by David Lean.

And another one of my favs is the Great Gatsby. Its easy to read and is short, but has a real flow, is pretty complex and has that touching emotional feel to it.

I think we must just have contrasting tastes because I found it hard to enjoy The Great Gatsby for the same reason I disliked Wuthering Heights, I hated the characters. I felt disconnected from everyone and didn't care what happened to them. I can appreciate it for reflecting a period and style of Americas past but it's never going to be one of my favourites.

:yikes:

I thought that was the point, Gatsby himself had twice the character of everyone else and you rooted for him as he gradually got destroyed. Your upsetting me now. Mice and men - now theres a characterless book.

In a way I suppose it is the point, the story is ultimately about the decay of the American dream and the characters exemplify that perfectly. So, while I can appreciate what Fitzgerald is trying to depict, it didn't make me love the book because I couldn't relate to any of it. I can understand it's significance in American history and why people love it but for me it didn't induce any emotion.

I love Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men is a great book.

Ugh, I hated that book. I think mainly because it was one of those books forced on you at school and I dislike extreme nit-picking of books.

I was forced to read the "Day of the Triffids" when I was in school... to be fair it was probably better aimed at us than "Of Mice and Men"

John Wyndham is one of my all-time favourite authors. But the Chrysalids is actually better than Day of the Triffids.

To be honest I have not thought about Day of the Triffids for ages, it was just when school reading was mentioned. Will have a look for Chrysalids next time I am out and about.

seeing as people seem to read a lot on here and I feel uneducated now lol

I was mad on John Wyndham when I was about 16, I read all his books then.
I remember having to read Sons and lovers at school and loving it, I read it again afterwards. Tess of the D'Urbevilles is another favourite from school days .

I love of Mice of Men, and Tortilla Flat. The only Steinbeck book I didn't care for was The Pearl. :yuck:

Speaking of Steinbeck, he's from Salinas California. Which is where I'm from, in fact a lot of his books are based around the area (Salinas valley, and Monterey).

Sons and Lovers is another one I love  But Tess is so depressing, as is most of Hardy's work. I read the least two depressing of his books that I could find (Far from the Madding Crowd and Under the Greenwood Tree) but I don't think I can face the rest, I've heard that Jude the Obscure is devastating.

I love Steinbeck, Of Mice and Men is a great book.

Have you read the Grapes of Wrath? That one is definitely worth a read. I keep meaning to buy East of Eden but never get round to it.

Don't buy East of Eden! It's verging on the unreadable - I've had it on the go for nearly a year and I can't get past half-way... If you really want to read it I'll post it to you - I give up!

Maybe I'll skip that then, there are already a few unfinished books lying around in the house.

I could not read Lord of the Rings the random bursting into song annoyed me.

I did what a lot of people did, watched the movies, loved them, and then tried the books only to be completely disappointed. They're a bit long winded.
