It is the world drivers champion that has number 1 on his car; hence why Arrows had numbers 1 & 2 in 1997 with Damon being booted out of the Williams as world champion.

Funny story actually. I recently went to a slot car festival at Brooklands raceway.

I bought this car which to me looks like the 1993 Williams. BUT it has the number 1 on the front of the car which was ofcourse saved for the current world champion, who at the time was Nigel Mansell. But ofcourse he didn't race that year so the number 1 car wasn't used. So this is a car that was never raced!

I think it will have been intended for celebrating that Hill was finally Champion. But I am really surprised they never made an FW18 from the 1996 season. Infact an FW14B has never been done... until this year.
