They can't change the championship result, Hamilton will remain champion. However, if Massa hadn't dashed in to the pits when the safety car came out, he looked set to win that race. So that would've been an extra ten points, but it's impossible to say what would have happened because without the safety car the positions would have been totally different. To me, it would just mean that the result of the 2008 championship was questionable, which is unfortunate really but there is nothing that could be done about it short of discounting all scores from the Singapore grand prix, which would not be a good solution at all (and it would change the result of the championship - Lewis would end up losing the title by five points).

No the championship or the race result will not be changed.

If Renault departs, wtf is Alonso going to do next year?

Drive for Ferrari? ;)

I'm shocked at this news. I'm also astounded that Piquet would actually crash deliberately - he must have some serious faith in the safety of his car

I do not believe that Alonso's 2010 seat is secure at Ferrari. A sabbatical will surely be in order if Renault decide to leave.

Words fail me - I wonder if large betting sums were also involved...

A dark day indeed for F1. I'm absolutely amazed such individuals could risk the life/career of their driver, other drivers and fans at the side of the track. It is unbelievable. :nono::rolleyes::thumbdown:

I just hope, when all the dust settles, that we don't find Fernando Alonso directly involved in these events - he remains a driver I have a great deal of admiration and respect for. :)

Well as far as I can see Alonso is not part of the investigation. Even judging by the Radio transcript that Denthul posted, I think that he had no part to play in the fix.

The Piquets have made accusation after accusation about Alonso this past week, but surely if those claims were reliable then he would also be under investigation. He was interviewed in Belgium by the Stewards and the FIA-hired Quest. His answers must have been satisfactory and he's been acquitted of any blame.

Formula One has been placed in turmoil and today's news practically seals Renault's fate.
In comparison to scandals in other sports this is just as big as the Serie A fix, the jockey fixes, the doping problems in the Tour De France.

Today's decision will drive out fans. Renault are my favoured team on the grid, but i'll overlook my own allegiance and focus on the wider issue.

A shameful act, and the only shining light for Renault is that the actual company must have carried out their own internal enquiry and deposed of those directly to blame.

It'd be interesting to see the full result of that race minus Alonso, would Massa have gotten more points and won the championship had this not happened.

Impossible to say, since the safety car and Massa's pit lane incident changed things completely. He would have come out of the pit lane still in first place most likely, but there's no way you can say that with certainty. Similarly, there's no saying where Hamilton would have ended up.

If Renault don't get kicked out of the sport which I believe will be the fine, how much would it cost them to pull out of the concord agreement?

Nothing. The Concorde agreement has been broken countless times in the past with teams leaving the sport.

Probably a lot if there's actually a clause in there regarding that. However, I think they would attempt to sell the team, in which case they wouldn't have to break the agreement.

I said something along the lines of this yesterday:

"The FIA must know something that we don't when they have given BMW Sauber the 14th team slot."

Plus the fact that BMW pushed ahead with the sale and issued a statement claiming that they were confident of the team being on the grid for next season.

Therefore I can only suspect that Renault's decision had been made in advance and that the FIA and the other teams all knew about it.

It would also point to Renault's exit from the sport.

I wonder what sort of bans the FIA will issue to Briatore and Symonds. How will they compare to say the ones given to those involved in Spy-gate?

Symonds could always take the immunity, if he hasn't already.

yeah he would be valuable to a team regardless of his role here

That's true, but would a team be willing to take the risk? Having had no history of cheating, this is very out-of-character for Symonds, so I personally would give him a second chance. However, if we look back over the years, Briatore has been involved in numerous things. Still, none of it is up to me.
