Lets all leave good ol' James alone. HIs unique commentary style gave me some very enjoyable moments during my F1 watching career

The man was the replacement for Murray Walker. Nobody could live up to that.

James Allen's commentary faield to live up to our expectations that he would fail to live up to his predecessor. He was worse than a cut below.

However if for example James Allen was the BBC man and Jonathan Legard was Murray Walker's replacement. We would surely all think that JL is terrible. The fatc is nobody can live up to the excellence that was MW. JA is a f****** legend. Hence my avatar and sig

Crofty.

Or better still, just get Murray back. I really hope that the BBC get him commentating on the TV feed at Silverstone. That would be epic!

This thread has gotten completely off track but hey it's a forum... s*** happens!
For the record I quite liked James Allen; his commentary added more interest to races than the actually racing in the Ferrari dominance era and he was a great partner for the uber technical Martin Brundle, Murray Walker is a legend because he became synonymous with the F1 brand around the world because of his long history of commenting on Formula 1 races, no-one can match that. I can't comment on Jonathan Legard as I have never heard his commentary because of my Stateside adventure!

Its good to see that I am not the only one on this board that recognises the supreme commentating abilities of James Allen!! No one could live up to Murray and James had a tough act to follow but he did it very well. Legard is annoying but I am still willing to give him a chance to find his feet.

Allen didn't help himself, but he was often coaxed into saying things, by ITV when it became clear that ITV had given up on actually being unbias in their coverage.

Legard has only been working with Martin for 4 months. It takes time to get a good rapport going. Clearly the knowledge of F1 is there but I certainly don't hear the passion in his voice that I heard from James. Legard just tell you the basic facts of the race, like he is reading a list. James crafted the race into a story and I like that style. I will give it a full season before I join Legard dissenters thread (has that been stated yet? ) but let's give him a chance.

I don't really think anybody was expecting Allen to live up to Walker's commentary. Fans were not annoyed about that, but his decadent bias for Ferrari, Schumacher, Hamilton and other British drivers.

I don't think you actually read what I said.

Legard is still adjusting to commentating on F1 for TV. He's getting there.
