I had completely forgotten about the engine freeze; but surely the FIA won't know what to compare to; unless the other engine manufacturers have their engines frozen earlier than Cosworth; which would be wholly unfair to the non-Cosworth teams!

Engines have been frozen for a couple years (more or less). All Cosworth will have to do is match the specs and the FIA will have a look at the output profile to compare with the other engines.

If that's the case then we might as well have standardised engines, surely new engines models would be included in any new regs that come out of budget-cap-gate?

So what you saying each team should use the same engine?

so enjoy watching F1 with 6 teams then, Because Mclaren, Force India, Williams, Red Bull and Torro Rosso and Brawn GP would be the only ones left.

Heck why don't we standerdise chasis too and cally it Indy1

and race on ovals..only.

No Wait lets not, because F1 isn't ment to be a spec series.

That isn't what I said; I said it would be unfair if Cosworth can develop their engine while all other teams engines have been frozen already. All teams would need to be allowed to develop another generation of engine which would be frozen at the same time as Cosworth's new V8. I really don't want and Indycar clone!

Cosworth can develop the engine to the same level as current f1 engines then it will be frozen

Isn't that a little unfair? If Cosworth develop an engine on par with say the Mercedes engine; wouldn't that put Cosworth immediately at the top of the pile while other teams that didn't develop such a good engine before being frozen effectively take another step backwards down the grid? Surely the level playing field ideal would mean that all engine makers should be allowed to develop a 2010 spec engine to be frozen before the start of the 2010 championship!

Did the freeze come in to play in 2006 or 2007? If it was 2006, it is plausible that the FIA could tell Cosworth to use the V8 they produced in that year.

I believe the engine freeze started at the beginning of the 2008 season and expired at the end of the 2010 season; so maybe the FIA will bring the end of the freeze forward one year to accommodate Cosworth's return to F1!

Where's your source for all this engine development talk?

Surely the other teams will have been developing their engines in the background for when the freeze expires... maybe we'll suddenly see these monster 1000hp V8's!

My logic for assuming the FIA will allow Cosworth to design a new engine comes from the fact that Cosworth haven't actively developed a F1 engine since 2006; two years before the freeze. If new teams using Cosworth engines are to be competitive then the 2006 engine will need an overhaul as the 2006 power-plant wasn't exactly competitive.
