How exactly is this out of hand?
I think you misunderstand the driver's position. Do you have any idea how much pain is involved when adrenaline hiccups occur? It's f*ckin' hell. Trying to bide your time halfway through a race is like trying to crush your lungs in a vice while blowing your load.I think banning re-fueling is a terrible idea. It adds a lot of excitement to a race with different strategies etc and by taking away this will remove a major part of modern F1 racing excitement !!!!!
Why don't they just introduce spec refueling systems that all teams have to use at the same cost.
I guarantee it will be a year like when they banned tyre changes, totally crap and it will be changed again the following year.
Uh no. It will be very interesting to watch how some of the current crop's hotshots will deal with this new situation: not only do they have to watch their tires, but now also their fuel consumption. Like in everyday life, if your driving style is too ragged and aggressive you use more fuel and in the case of F1 you might not be able to finish the race or will have to slow down to make it.
Also, the engine that is the most economical will have the advantage to be able to use a smaller fuel tank (with all its implied benefits) and isn't that a good thing and a step towards a greener F1?
Uh, in my opinion yes!
If we get to a situation where a driver who is winning the race could potentially lose his lead because he has to drive "more economical" to make it to the end is ludicrous!!
As for greener F1, freewheeling down the hills will not make for an exciting race!
All I can say to that is, he shouldn't have burned up all his fuel in the first place. This is what will separate the great drivers from the good drivers - the ability to do things like this. Presently, drivers know that they can drive flat-out for the entire race because whenever the fuel gets low, all they have to do is pit. With that safety net taken away, it will force them to think much more about how they drive, when to push and when to bide their time, and how best to manage a situation. If they know that they will be staying out longer than the guy in front, but they're not dropping back, the smart driver would turn his engine down and wait for the guy in front to pit for tyres and then, when he does, turn it back up and put in some quick laps in an attempt to leap-frog. In a similar scenario, the driver behind could stay as close as possible to the driver in front without burning up too much fuel (or his tyres) and wait for tyre wear to come in to play. When the guy in front is losing time because his tyres are worn, the guy behind makes his move.
Altogether, it will promote more strategic thinking on the driver's part, rather than the team's, and generally mean that the driver has to do more throughout a race.
Refuelling adds to the teams race strategy, Poor old Ayrton (R.I.P) would turn in his grave now, if he knew what was going on in his beloved sport

Where is the racing part of the race, when the drivers aren't driving to the limit of the car? What the race will turn into is a calculation....we have XX amount of fuel on board, we have to go YY laps....so we can use XX/YY fuel per lap...that means we can go ZZ km/hr average. That is the equivalent of a rally against a stop watch.
Pit: Jenson, you were half a second too fast that lap, you are burning too much fuel...SLOW DOWN.
Jenson: I never left 3rd gear the entire god damn lap...am I a race driver or a freakin taxi driver on a damn meter out here?!?
Pit: We have been over this Jenson...racing where the goal is to be the fastest guy is sooooo last year. Slow down or we will run out of gas again
Jenson: Last race I ran out and pushed the car for an entire lap and still won...hell, pushing it I lapped Lewis for the third time
Pit: Yeah, that was funny....but you gave yourself two blisters while pushing the car...do you want another ambulance ride with Mosley?
Jenson: Shifting back to 2nd gear on the straight...god this sucks bottom. Can you read me that last email from Nascar again please...better yet, forward it to my blackberry and I'll read it on the next straight.
Racing is about going fast...and going fast burns fuel. Convert the cars to electric and have them come in to swap batteries a few times a race...fine..but slowing them down in order to conserve fuel is not going to improve the show. Tree hugging, environmentalist liberals..........
When it came to calculating when to push and when to hold back to save fuel, this is where drivers like Prost would suddenly charge through and win the race whilst Piquet's Brabham BMW would be coughing on its last drops of fuel and coming to a stop in the closing laps. And then you would have drivers like Mansell who would just throw out the rule book on fuel consumption, take a gamble and charge like mad.

Same as the no tyre change rule. It will be scrapped half way through the season.
