Hey guys, I'm just wondering about something. Thinking about Lewis Hamilton's troubles this year, has there ever been a driver that won the world drivers championship and then had a disastrous next season, and then recovered in following seasons to win more championship?

I don't really remember there being one, although I've only been watching for eleven years.

I guess I'll have to scour the record books.

Nelson Piquet, apparently.

1981 - Champion, 50pts
1982 - 11th, 20pts
1983 - Champion, 59pts

Schumacher in 1996 i guess... although he still won a few races!

I can't think of any where the driver has done what you said in such extreme circumstances as Hamilton's current situation in recent times, although sometimes a driver has mounted a strong challenge, had a relatively poor season then won the title (Raikkonen '05 - '07?). In fact, look at Schumacher dominating in '04, had a terrible '05 (only one win which was total luck in Indy), then he won 7 races in 2006. Not bad going even though he didn't win the title...

edit: Appears Denthul has a good example!

I didn't say history was repeating itself, just that there were similarities. Also, sub-par car is a sub-par car. The FW20 was disgusting! :hehe:

I know man but DD was implying it.

I was thinking Schumacher, but he didn't win the championship in either of the years after.

And I'm still bitter about Indy, even though I probably shouldn't be :(

Well, whichever team you supported would dictate what you made of it all i think - my opinion is that Ferrari opposed a chicane to give themselves basically a guaranteed victory from the off... still, it's done now. That '05 Ferrari was a weird car, so inconsistent!

Unfortunately for all of us we don't have the US Grand Prix any more, but we have the Indy 500 and the coca-cola 600 after Monaco tomorrow. It's gonna be great. I'm ready; I''m not gonna miss one minute of it. I'll be watching all 12 hours of it!!

With me being a Barrichello fan, I thought you'd have realised that it had nothing to do with the tyre issue... :hehe:

Ah, of course! :hehe: I actually watched the '05 review DVD yesterday, he was metres away from taking the lead when Schumacher stopped... ah well. He's saving up his karma to win at Interlagos this year!:yes:

I might actually CRY if Rubens doesn't win Interlagos.

Well, Interlagos is one of the races that Rubens has targeted for victory this season. If he doesn't win, and you may cry, just think how he might feel. Also, I feel that the first victory he gets this year will see him in a state similar to the following, given the fact that it has been over four years since he last won a race.
